Panel Question

A question that came up on one of the Ya panels: "What does writers owe readers?" has still got me thinking.

The person in that particular context was saying that the writers owe readers, especially kid readers, a reading experience that does not advocate immorality. Someone else spoke up quite sharply saying that writer owe their readers absolutely nothing.

Someone else said you owe them reasonably accessible work. Others said you owe them truth, but there was a snarl of argument on what constitutes truth because it seemed to dive back toward those pesky morals.

Anyway, I'm curious what others think, if anything, that writers owe to readers--whether YA or not.

writing: obligation to readers, ya
