I can never really get very involved with activist groups. I'm always worried that no matter how reasonable and purely motivated they appear that behind all that there are crazy people, or greedy people or just plain misguided. For example, according to angriest the boss of Greenpeace gets paid millions of dollars a year. And also apparently Arnold ( Read more... )

Heya - wrt to Greenpeace's CEO, same situation came up with Red Cross's CEO a few years ago. Media released the fact that he earned ~$1m (tax free because he worked for a charity)- also that Commissioner of Tax (ATO) earned ~$500k a year.

Everybody was all "OMG WTF" over it because it was charity and government respectively. However, as it turned out, compared to other CEOs both Red Cross and Commissioner of Tax were earning significantly less because they were working for government and charity. It's one of those things - CEOs of any company will always earn more than their employees - and usually more than us little people.

I totally expect a CEO to earn (minimum) half a mil a year, especially since a company that size would have to be employing professionals at that level. That's not the same as 'millions', though Angriest can actually find any evidence now, he was told by someone he trusts.

As far as I know (but I don't really know) they are OK. I first noticed them during the protests leading up to the invasion of Iraq and I vaguely recall that they were instrumental in organising those protests. I don't tend to donate to this sort of thing myself (perhaps my pockets are too long) but I'm happy that there are other people that do.

Awesome ad! *applauds*

I don't have a problem with the asking for donations part because if they don't ask, they don't get, right? Also, I FAR prefer charities and activisim groups to ask for money this way than effing ringing me up at home or at work!! I automatically refuse to donate money to anyone who invades my cone of privacy. TV and print ads fine. Billboards, fine. Ringing me up = incur my wrath FOREVER. grr.
