Return from Egypt!

Aug 26, 2008 10:16

We got home in the early hours of Monday morning after a 51/2 hour flight in a very cramped plane.  Sometimes I’m glad I’m only of average height! Egypt was good - very touristy.  Sharm-el-Sheikh has been built purely for the tourist industry.  The Red Sea is fantastic and great for snorkelling and scuba diving (I did the former but not the latter) and someone decided to throw a few hotels up there.  The few hotels have now multiplied! There was no culture as such, but it was great for relaxing and getting some much needed sun.  We went out into the Sinai desert twice; once to have a came ride and visit the Bedouin people, and the second time to experience a Bedouin meal and view the stars from the desert.
I got through 12 books - I’ll list and review them in the next entry!
Pictures under the cut.

Pictures here to save your flists

Our room cleaner was very creative with the clean towels!

Chris took this while he was on the camel (I was too busy clinging on for dear life!)  I'm on the camel to the left.

The Bedouin camel owner leading away a couple of the camels.  The children also had jobs looking after the camels.  We got to the Bedouin camp where the camels were sat down waiting.  I climbed on mine and immediately it stood up and began to trot away!  When the ride had finished mine refused to sit down... I guess it liked having a passenger.  I am not showing any pics of me on the camel here because I look fat, even though I'm not.

Bedouin camps

Chris making Bedouin bread.  It was a little like chappati.

The Bedouin children.  The Bedouins live in the Sinai and basically live hand to mouth.  The kids were cute, but after money.  One little girl followed me around with her baby brother, holding his hand out saying 'give baby money'.  I refused, although I did buy some of their goods.  The girls go to school until around secondary school, or until they begin menstruating.  Then they have to wear full dress when strangers or non-family are present.

Me and Chris in te hotel room.  The dress was one of my pre holiday bargains.  It should have been £50 and it was reduced to £15!  This was at the beginning of the week so I look rather pale.  Chris had already had a week on hol with his folks so he was brown to start.  He looked like an Egyptian by the end of the week!

Slightly browner.  This was another bargain dress - should have been £85 and it was reduced to £25!  I'm wearing it for a wedding in a couple of weeks, just hoping I can lose a stone beforehand.  I am not photogenic and don't really look like I do in photos!

There are no photos of the resort, just because it wasn't that interesting!  We did take 200 photos, but I'm sure you don't want to see all of them! I'm putting them into an album on photobucket, so let me know if you do want to see any more.
