I was away from my computer most of the day, working in the machine shop. It wasn't until 5 or 5:30 that I got on the internet to see how the election was going. Obama had a small lead, but it was mostly undecided. I went home and flipped on the TV, cautiously optimistic. Dave and I flipped channels for a while, and I was watching Comedy Central's "Indecision 2008" when Jon Stewart (who I love and respect) said "as of 11pm Eastern Standard Time, Barack Obama is the new president of the United States." I was filled with such a mix of "is he serious" and pride and joy and relief and just this sense of "oh my god, it *is* a historic moment". It was amazing. I watched most of McCain's concession speech - which was quite good, but I suppose he's good at losing by now, and has nothing to lose now by being humble, polite, and noble. I only caught the very end of Obama's speech, but just seeing him on stage with that beautiful smile of his almost made me cry.
Bummer about Prop 8, though. It's the only thing making me not completely happy about this election. Usually I am proud of California and disappointed in the US, and this time it is the reverse.
Anyway, now we can go to Hawaii and relax and the election is behind us. I'm pretty much packed and ready to go, even though we don't leave until Thur.
