My poor, negelcted blog. Busiest December ever; got a bunch of small jobs and other issues that keep me from getting them done in any reasonable amount of time.
This will probably send me spiraling farther into the "crazy chicken lady" stereotype in the minds of anyone reading this.
About 10AM I hear the hens making their "I just laid and egg" noise. Except the sound was unfamiliar. I knew one of the copper marans had laid her first egg because I didn't recognize the sound of the cackling-We'll soon have four new voices to add to the cacophony 30 feet from our door. How much times does one spend around a flock of 21 chickens that you can recognize their voices?!
We've been getting one egg every other day or so, as it's winter and yes, we're using a light, but we probably have too many roosters(3) and half the flock is getting a bit old. For this first time in a month, we had more than one egg. Next to the usual taupe egg was a tiny black copper marans egg. We have 4 copper marans that Bobbie brought home in June.
French chefs insist on ONLY BCM eggs, as they supposedly have better taste and quality, though I'd like to know how they cook them to get the best flavor out. BCM eggs used to go for $3-$5 EACH on the restaurant market. Now that they've caught on in the states, they'll probably be closer to a regular price. The pores in the shell are smaller, and BCM eggs are less likely to contain salmonella.
