long and descriptive but here it is.sarizaFebruary 1 2011, 14:53:23 UTC
Thank you so much! And you are very welcome! The cover art was something that bothered me for a long time so I'm glad you like it.
Heads will Roll has more allusions to Alice in Wonderland but I always picture the Tudors where decapitates people like mad or the French Revolution with its overuse of the guillotine. So I had to add it. :)
For each song I tried to keep it general to most queen cases. I didn't want to Make a Marie Antoinette mix, or a Boadicea Mix, or a every single one of Henry's wives mix but I there are some queens situations that inspired each song.
For Pretty Dress, I got inspiration from Jeanne of Navarre who was basically groomed to be her whole life to be wed. When she finally was, her mother in law (who was displeased with the union) tried to kill her time a couple of times. People said Jeanne was eventually killed via a pair of poisoned gloves she was to wear to her wedding day given to her by her mother in law but the autopsy report says she died of tuberculosis.
Marry me was mostly inspired by Kitty Howard, Henry 8's 5th wife. Kitty was married to Henry when he was no longer the attractive king he once was. He had become fat and a leg wound he had gave off a nasty odor and needed to drained of pus each night. Kitty, completely unschooled in the rules of monarchy, fell for the charms of Culpepper and lost her head because of it.
For God Save the Queen, Although the lyrics are more privy to a an English queen I was reminded more of a French Princess turned Spanish Queen, Blanche of Bourbon. Her parents married her off to Pedro the Cruel, who locked her in a tower (much like Rapunzel). Although people were sympathetic to her situation no one was sent to rescue her and she spent a third of her life locked in that tower until her death 8 years later. Pedro either poisoned her or sent an assassin to kill her with a crossbow. She was 22.
Shut Your Mouth was inspired by Marie Antoinette, who was doomed to be Queen when the French did not want one, especially ad Austrian one. Her reputation was completely destroyed by hearsay and then her life was completely destroyed by the Revolution.
Apres Moi is a second song that has ties to Marie Antoinette. The phrase in this song 'Apres Moi de la luge' was said to be a quote from her husband meaning, 'After me comes the flood' but I actually Sophia Aleksyevna. She convinced her Russian Tsar father to let her take lessons with her older brother. Sophia rebelled in other small ways. She insisted on attended council meetings and made sure she conversed with those important men who influenced policies in Russia. Her brother fell ill and died leaving the throne to her younger brothers Ivan and Peter who remained uneducated (apparently they were too far down the line of successors). Ivan was an invalid so Peter was to rule at 10 years old. Sophia got to skeaming. She spread rumors that Peter's relatives poisoned her older brother and then she convinced her younger brothers that it would be in their best interest to let her rule until they were old enough to share the throne. She was a great queen until Peter turned 17 when she was forced to surrender the throne. A decade later, when Peter was out of the country some of Sophia's supporters rioted and were killed and hung outside Sophia's window. Since Sophia was smart she knew in order to save her life she had to become a nun. She spent the rest of her life in solitary confinement. Peter wasn't a too hot ruler lending inspiration to the words 'after me comes the flood. The line, "You can't break that which isn't yours" refers to tradition. Although Sophia was more qualified to rule than her brother and a great ruler, she was woman and men were the rulers. A tradition like many others she tried to break.

Viva la Vida is yet another song with ties to Marie Antoinette. Coldplay's song was said to be inspired by her husband Louis VI 's Rule. I picked Lady Gaga's rendition after rummaging through a massive amount of covers as I wanted a female singer. I also wanted the lines 'The old king is dead, long live the king' to be changed to Queen but none of the covers had this. Eventually the lines 'For my blonde head on a silver plate' and 'Oh who would ever want to be queen?' won out. When I hear this song I really do think of Marie Antoinette. But the references to gambling and being the supreme ruler only to have your subjects turn against you. The is a universal theme for a lot of rulers. Some themes of the song can be referenced to Jane Grey who ruled for only 9 days before she was executed by her cousin, Mary and Mary Queen of Scots, who was executed by her cousin, Elizabeth I, and known for her religious devotion and considered a Martyr.
The poem "Oh Death Rock Me Asleep" was believed to have been authored by Anne Boleyn and reveals that she may have hoped death would end her suffering. Although it is now known that the poem was not penned by Anne, I feel it adequately describes what it feels like to wait for your execution.
