Another year, another entry in review. This is late, but I have very good excuses: I moved, then I went to Boston, then I got stuck in Boston for two extra days due to the two feet of snow and canceled flights, then I spent all day yesterday running errands and finishing unpacking. Today I finally get to start hanging up pictures (my favorite part!) and can maybe get a cleaning in. My life is so exciting.
1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Became an aunt. Planned and attended baby showers. Started working out on a regular basis (until this month, due to several reasons. None of which have to do with my health though, so I can start it up again now that things are calmed down). Rented a townhouse, and using a Realtor as opposed to Craig's List or hearing about something from a friend. Saw two Broadway shows in one day. (I recommend this, BTW. It was divine) Met David Hyde Pierce, whom I've loved since I was 12. Volunteered with an association, went on a Memory Walk. Went to a film festival for work (and paid for by work!) Made a film for my mom.
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't think I made any last year. I said I was going to, but if I did, I didn't write them down and don't remember. I always have really good intentions but then inevitably my laziness kicks in. But maybe this year?
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes! My sister and my best friend both gave birth in September, to a boy and girl respectively.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My coworker, David passed away in June. Oh - that's another thing I did this year for the first time: Attend a Catholic Mass funeral.
5. What countries did you visit?
America
6. Did you have any crushes?
I had a potential crush with this dude from Match.com. We went out three times. The first two were lovely, and the last one was just really weird. Then we never saw each other again.
7. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Ok guys, this is going to sound really lame and pathetic but: I would like a boyfriend. I know. But I am surrounded by couples (and now living with one) and will be 30 this year. I haven't had a boyfriend in years. Literally. So I'd really like one. I know this involves some effort on my part, but honestly, I am through with Internet dating. Tried it for like 3 years with no success. And really I'd like to meet someone the old fashioned way. Any suggestions?
8. What dates from 2010 will remain etched in your memory, and why?
September 14th my nephew was born. September 21st, my best friend's daughter was born. Those are pretty important dates. In June, we all met in Boston for my mom's 60th birthday and presented her with the video we made for her. In October 22-24 was the awesome, awesome AWESOME DHP weekend in New York with my friend Nicki. July 4th weekend I went to Chicago, DIDN'T see U2, but hung with my friends Tom and Vic, and then went to my old college town.
9. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Making my mom's video for her 60th birthday. It was a LOT. Not only going through pictures, but this year I got a sound recorder and interviewed people, and incorporated those into the video. It was really fun and came out well, but man was that a lot of work.
10. What is your biggest failing of 2010?
Hmm. In a way I want to say not being social enough, but looking through my calendar, I did get together with people. Maybe not making an effort to meet new people, and being scared to go to events where I won't know anybody.
11. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I got really sick in October, over Halloween weekend. And I went through a period of time there where I kept on cutting myself (now have two scars on my left hand to prove it) and running into things. It was over the summer and I was up to my ears in baby shower plans and my mom's video so I think I was just really distracted. But nothing serious.
12. What was the best thing you bought?
All the tickets we got for the DHP weekend, and renting my house.
13. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My sister, y'all. I just spent a week with her and she's doing a REALLY great job as a mom. Not to slight my brother-in-law, he is doing a good job too. But, uh, he doesn't produce the milk, so the brunt of it is really on her. In a way I can't believe how she's adapted so well to motherhood, and in another way, I am not surprised at all.
Also, as always, I think what Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert do is amazing. Look what they did this year with the rallies. And Jon Stewart helping get the 9/11 responders bill passed.
14. Whose behavior made you appalled and disgusted?
Verizon, you guys. VERIZON. You have no idea how many hours I have spent on the phone with them these past two months. It's ridiculous. And things still aren't as they should be. Also, my old roommate, Sofia. In the grand scheme of things, she is a perfectly fine person. She paid rent on time, she didn't have wild parties, and didn't try to kill me in my sleep. But the day to day shit? Leaving the kitchen sink a mess every morning, leaving hair all over the bathroom and NOT cleaning it up, having her really annoying boyfriend over all the time, being so passive aggressive and refusing to deal with things...she drove me batty. I am so glad to be rid of her.
15. Where did most of your money go?
Tickets to see shows (Broadway and local), the new townhouse, and um...maybe Starbucks. That last one is kinda embarrassing.
16. What did you get really really excited about?
My nephew, my mom's video, DHP weekend, moving in with my current roommates. Spamalot. (Seriously)
17. What song will always remind you of 2010?
I don't know about a song per se, but the music from Spamalot and La Cage Aux Folles will remind me of 2010.
18. Compared to this time last year are you?
Happier of sadder: Same
Fatter or thinner: A little thinner, and definitely in better shape
Richer or Poorer: At the moment, much poorer. But that will change in a few months.
19. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Gone out of my apartment? I know I say this all the time, and every year, but I really do need to be more social. It's just healthier.
20. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Being annoyed at Sofia. I mean, yes it was warranted, but it was/is so draining. And probably not just on me. Ask my parents or Jeff: I am sure they got sick of hearing me bitch about her.
21. How will you be spending New Years Eve?
I spent it at home unpacking, doing laundry and watching Party Down. Not what I would have pictured a month ago, but after the chaotic month of December, it was nice to try and get some order. Though I have to admit, I did have some moments of feeling like a loser.
22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Does my nephew count?
23. How many one-night stands?
Zero.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
I think if I say anything other than Frasier it will just be a lie. I watched it damn near every day. Shows currently airing: Mad Men, Cougar Town, Big Bang Theory, Community. Glee
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No, I don't think so. It takes a lot for me to outright hate someone. Dislike, sure. But hate? No.
26. What was the best book that you read?
The Risk Pool by Richard Russo. And, this is total fluff and all, but I started rereading the Dresden books by Jim Butcher. Read the first 6 in college and then...I don't know why but stopped. I got all of them to date this year and am currently on book 7. They aren't literature by any stretch, but they are enjoyable as hell.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Spamalot, you guys. Also Wilco's Kicking Television live album from like, 2007. Sometimes I am behind on things.
28. What did you want and get?
To not live with Sofia anymore.
29. What did you want and not get?
To see both my old boyfriend and Ghost of the Robot in California. They played two shows, and both times I was doing something important. The first time I was meeting my nephew, and the second time I was moving.
30. What was your favorite film of the year?
Inception. But to be fair, I only saw like 3 movies in the theater this year. Oh, I watched Fisher King the other night. Does a movie from 1991 count? It's amazing, y'all.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 29 (eep!) and it was actually a weird weekend. On Friday, Jeff and I went out in an attempt to celebrate, but we went to this diner and I had the worst food I've ever had in my life. Then we tried to get some booze to make up for it, but all the liquor stores were closed at like, 10 on a Friday night. Saturday was my actual birthday, and in the afternoon, my best friend and her husband came over and we went out to lunch, then I went over to my parents' for the evening, and spent the night. Sunday I went to a funeral for a friend of a friend (yeah), and then my dad and I went to see Malcolm Gets in Lisbon Traviata at the Kennedy Center.
32. What one thing would have made your year measurably more satisfying?
I would tell you but then I'd have to kill you.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Same as it's been for the past 29 years.
34. What kept you sane?
Um, well, my family, my friends. Going to see shows in NY, as it gave me something to look forward to.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I think anything other than David Hyde Pierce would just be a lie.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Gay marriage and DADT.
37. Who did you miss?
So, my ex-boyfriend and I started talking a few years ago and this year it's become semi-regular. And I know, know KNOW that we would never work in the long run. We've had discussions about it, we want different things, etc. But guys, he writes the best emails and it makes me really miss him.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
My nephew
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
Everything in life is only for now.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year
This was...not a bad year, but I dunno. it was a long year. I am ready for 2011. Anyway, this song will least remind me of 2010, even if it doesn't sum it up.It's from Spamalot, and I know it's supposed to be tongue and cheek, but I actually think it's very true. (It's also really fucking funny.)
