Summary: Pepper gets a look at JARVIS' insides. Drabble. Tony/Pepper if you want to read it that way :)
The first time Pepper gets a look at JARVIS' code, she has no idea what she's staring at. Tony had scampered up out of the workshop for unknown reasons, leaving the AI's code on his giant monitors, and Pepper spends at least a minute staring at it and thanking God that she'd gone for art history in college, not computer science.
Not that Tony had gone for computer science. But he's a genius, and she no longer stops trying to equate their accomplishments. She never had, really. There's not actually a contest, there.
"So that's... you, JARVIS?" she asks uncertainly, and swears she can detect a slight hint of warmth in the computerized British voice when the AI responds.
"It is indeed, Miss Potts."
For a moment she watches the code scroll down the screen, amazed at how much there is, how complicated it all is, and how essential each character is to the whole. She knows from her meagre attempts at basic HTML that one letter or symbol out of place can spell disaster for the entire project, and Tony's written all of this. All on his own. It's... mind-boggling.
And it doesn't seem so different, to her, how all of those letters and numbers in that exact order makes up what JARVIS is, and how cells placed in a specific way make up who she is. She doesn't realize she'd spoken that thought aloud until Jarvis responds.
"Very astute, Miss Potts." Pause. "Mr. Stark appears to be returning with a large quantity of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter. How should I proceed?"
Pepper closes her eyes, trying not to smirk. She can't let Tony know that she finds his erratic behavior amusing. It would only egg him on.
"Have Dummy bring down a few plates." Although... now, of course she's craving peanut butter. Curse Tony and his odd snacks. "And two spoons."
"Right away, Miss Potts."
