The word gilgul means 'turning, spinning, moving in a circle, meandering through a series of arbitrary events.'
The phrase gilgul nipashot means, literally, 'the cyclical movement of spirits or souls.' That is, reincarnation. But it also brings to mind an image of people spinning and turning and moving back and forth aimlessly, from one place to another.
