This was, clearly, The Episode Of Continuity.
First things first: when UNIT soldiers showed up at the Ponds’, I totally thought they said something about “Torchwood 4.” Maybe the Range Rover affected my hearing.
(And that is rather interesting, that UNIT is stepping up to the more scientifically-oriented aspects. That was, once, Torchwood’s purview. Torchwood is now defunct. Completely. Except when Gwen and Jack are off being a rogue organization of two, apparently. “We’re Torchwood! And Rhys. And some misfits we found along the way. Fear us!”)
We had mentions of K9, Lethbridge-Stewart, mentions of past companions, Gallifreyan children, and (I’ve decided) a couple of nods to Torchwood: the SUV and the Doctor’s snippy, “Who has an underground base!?”
Why do we have this continuity now, when it’s often ignored in the day-to-day running with the Doctor? Because it is important now. And we will find out why soon, I suppose.
Other things of note:
Last week, in Mercy, the Doctor mentions Rory leaving his charger in Henry VIII’s ensuite. This week, they visit Henry VIII. So, do the Pond’s just like him that much, or did Mercy occur during their anniversary party adventures?
Lights went out.
Christmas happened.
That’s right. The lights did not flicker - they went out. Christmas was not mentioned - it happened.
The Doctor is, occasionally, exactly like Sherlock. Including upside-down-couch-sitting. (A mark of geniuses everywhere, I’m sure.)
Brian and Wilf need to hang out.
Rory kissed the Doctor. The Doctor looked - well, he looked quite pleased, actually.
(I’D SHIP IT. Also, last night at the bar, there was a hypothesis that Rory might be the Master. This makes that so much more interesting.)
Amy and the Doctor had a nice conversation. That made me think about Rose, and maybe made the Ten and Rose dynamic more sensible in my mind.
Three and Seven are fairy tale numbers. The Shakti or whatever were the monsters of the fairy tales told to Gallifreyan children. An easy connection, but still satisfying.
The Tower and Henry VIII. Henry had his wives (Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard) beheaded there. His daughter with Anne, Elizabeth, was imprisoned there. I know there’s probably no actual connection in this one, but I enjoyed it all the same.
What would happen if the cubes showed up (well, activated) at the same time that Miracle Day happened?
