Chapter Two: Can You Feel The Love Tonight?
“Hey, Britt. You got a minute?”
Brittany sighed, looking away from the padlock on her locker. It was the start of the school year and she’d already forgotten her combination. “Sure.” She said blearily.
Puck chuckled. “Forgotten your combo already, Britt?”
Brittany narrowed her eyes ever so slightly. “Did you need something, Puck?”
The boy in question raised his eyebrows suggestively. “Well, now that you mention it…”
“Puck.” Finn interrupted from behind him, shaking his head slightly. He turned to look at Brittany, his expression brightening. “Actually, Brittany, there was something we wanted to ask you.”
“If you didn’t mind, that is.” Mike added, from the other side. He grinned.
“Yeah.” Blaine said, walking out from behind Finn’s looming figure. Brittany glanced between him and Finn, amazed at the height difference. “About Santana.” Blaine added, picking up on the girl’s distraction.
“Oh.” Brittany replied, blinking. Her gaze dropped and she swallowed visibly. “Yeah?”
The newest member of the New Directions walked closer to the girl and touched her arm lightly, comforting her the best way he could.
Mike cleared his throat. “Are you guys together yet?”
Brittany felt her eyes watering out of their volition. She swallowed, shaking her head. “No.” She said in a tiny voice, her fingers tracing invisible patterns on her locker door.
“Why not?” Finn asked, his voice confused. “I mean, it’s like… so obvious that you love each other.”
“Who loves each other?” A voice called out from his shoulder. The three boys jumped, revealing an eyebrow-raised Quinn.
“San and Britts.” Puck responded, leaning comfortably against the locker adjacent to Brittany’s.
“That’s my locker.” Quinn pointed out, motioning for Puck to move away. He made a face and pushed himself off the metal surface. “And yeah, we all know Santana and Brittany love each other.” She twisted the combination expertly. “Why you all cornering Brittany?”
“Probably to ask her the same questions you asked Santana the other day in the choir room.” Finn said, a sly tone sliding into his voice. Quinn pinked slightly.
“What?” Brittany piped up, looking from Finn to Quinn rapidly. “What are you guys talking about?”
"Yeah, what are we talking about?” A voice interrupted. Five heads whipped around to watch Santana approach Brittany’s locker, a perfected glare on her face. “Frankenteen? Asian? Ladyface Lover? Puck?” Santana’s eyes narrowed. “Quinn?”
“No-nothing.” Finn stammered, his face reddening as he backed away rapidly, turning and setting off for the opposite direction.
Mike shrugged and clapped a hand over Brittany’s shoulder. “See you later B.”
Blaine plastered on a ridiculously bright smile, his eyes moving from Brittany to Santana. “Good morning, Santana.” He replied, waving slightly. “We were just about to talk about courage before you showed up. You know, courage to do the things you want to do. Courage to fight for the things you really want in life. Courage to love who you want to love. Courage to be yourself.” He paused. “Wanna join us?”
Puck groaned, and Quinn slapped a palm over her face. Santana looked murderous. “No, thanks.” She hissed, “We probably have different ideas on what true courage is, anyways. So go on, get lost.” She waved her hand off. “I bet Ladyface is looking for you somewhere anyway.” Blaine shuffled his feet slightly, then shrugged.
“Alright, Santana. But remember. Courage.” He turned on his heels and marched off before the Latina could respond.
Santana rolled her eyes and shifted her gaze to Puck and Quinn, who were both trying and failing to make their shoes look interesting. “Ugh, can you both just go?”
“Yep.”
“Alright.”
Before they were out of earshot, they heard Santana say to Brittany in a considerably gentler tone, “Here, let me open that for you.”
Quinn laughed. “I can see what’s happening.”
“What?” Puck replied, glancing over his shoulder.
“And they don’t have a clue.” continued Quinn, a small smile forming over her lips.
“Who?” Puck asked, his eyebrows scrunching up adorably.
Quinn motioned subtly towards Brittany and Santana, who were both talking softly to each other by Brittany’s open locker. Neither seemed to remember that Brittany needed to take her books out. “They’re so in love and here’s the bottom line: unholy trio’s down to two.”
“Oh.” Puck deadpanned, shrugging. He turned back to Quinn, a serene smile on her face, a dreamy look in her eyes.
“The sweet caress of twilight.” She sang sweetly, making her way down the hallway. Puck followed her quickly. “There’s magic in the air. And with all this romantic atmosphere…” She trailed off.
“…happiness’s in the air.” Puck finished, grinning.

“Are you up for stakeout tonight?” Quinn’s voice asked him over his phone.
“Stakeout?” Kurt repeated, excitement seeping into his voice.
“Yeah. Santana finally asked Brittany out.” She let out a sigh. “Finally.”
“How do you know?” Kurt asked, moving towards his wardrobe to go over what he could wear. “When did she ask? Oh, gosh. Details, details, I need details.”
“She asked her by B’s locker yesterday. Meet us at Breadstix in around twenty minutes. I’ll fill you in on everything.” There was a slight pause. “Oh, and bring Blaine.”
“Absolutely.” Kurt grinned, squealing with childish delight.

“Over there, can you see them?” Rachel hissed, pointing excitedly, leaping up and down.
“Calm down! We can see them.” Blaine whispered, grabbing Rachel’s arm.
“Oh my God, Brittany looks lovely in blue.” Kurt gasped. “What’s Santana wearing? I can’t see her decently from over here…”
“She’s wearing gold.” Finn informed his step-brother, squinting to get a clearer view. “It actually looks like… wow…she’s actually shimmering.”
“She is.” Quinn confirmed. “Her dress is, at least.”
“What’s happening?” Tina asked, trying to get a better view.
“They’ve just taken their seats.” Mike replied.
“Actually, Santana pulled Brittany’s seat out.” Puck clarified. “I knew she had it in her. She always felt like a bro.”
“People are actually staring.” Mercedes said in a stunned voice. “And pointing! Hell to the no, whatever happened to respecting privacy?”
“We should help them maintain some decent semblance of intimacy.” Rachel declared. And before anyone could stop her, she marched out from the shrubs they were hiding behind and walked into the restaurant.
“Finn!” Quinn growled. “Stop her!”
Kurt groaned. “This is Rachel we’re talking about. Come on, we better go in before she ruins their first date completely.”
“I’m actually a little bit more worried about Santana killing her.” Mercedes said dully.
But before any of them could move any further, Blaine grabbed Kurt’s arm and pointed to the tiny stage, where Rachel was standing, microphone in hand. Just as the New Directions entered the tiny establishment, the first notes of an all-too familiar song drifted from Rachel’s lips.

“Can you feel the love tonight? The peace the evening brings? The world for once, in perfect harmony, with all it’s living things.”
Santana gazed across the candlelit table at the girl before her. The flame danced beneath Brittany, throwing shadows across the planes of her flesh, accentuating the flawless asymmetry of her face. Before she could even think about what she was doing, her mouth opened and words slipped out in perfect harmony: “So many things to tell her, but how to make her see, the truth about my fears? Impossible. She’d turn away from me.”
Brittany tilted her head to a side and reached out to clasp Santana’s hand in hers. She continued in a much softer voice, “She’s holding back, she’s hiding. But what? I can’t decide. Why won’t she be the queen I know she is, the queen I see inside?”
“Can you feel the love tonight?” The New Directions sang in chorus from the raised platform. “The peace the evening brings? The world for once, in perfect harmony, with all its living things.”
Brittany leaned forward slightly, her free hand ghosting over Santana’s cheeks. When she felt the skin there warm beneath her fingertips, she grinned happily.
“Can you feel the love tonight? You needn’t look too far.”
Santana leaned forward slightly, until her entire cheek was in Brittany’s palm, her tense shoulders finally relaxed. Brittany’s eyes softened in the candlelight, the gentle fire reflecting in her clear, blue eyes.
“Stealing through the night’s uncertainties, love is where they are.”
