I agree with your analysis, especially the forced parallels seemed, well, forced. A subtle hand would have worked much better. For the entire season I was left asking myself: but why them and them alone?

These episodes worked for me more in terms of small moments, and the acting when it was good.

As for Michael, I liked his first introduction, but I am not saying anything else for fear of spoiling you.

Also this: This issue that is all of a sudden front page news? Now I see why they made such a stink about it in 5x05. Heaven and Hell both have a dog in this race. "Let me grow up!" "Stop being mean to me!" "You pushed me away!" "You left us!" Oh my god, show, get OVER it. I'm so sick of this growing up teen wangst.

SO MUCH YES. It's so overcooked now, and such a minor thing considered their experience it's off putting.

And now I wonder if you're going to like 5.16. Hmmm

Then I watched 5x14, and OMG, SHOW, JUST STOP IT NOW. I can't tell you how much I hate the development of not only the boys being Destined for Doom, but also that John and Mary are pawns in their own life. So now it's a conspiracy.

This is part of why S5 was so frustrating. God, the RETCONNING through the roof, and none of it good! (and there's more to come). Who the hell was 'Babe In The Woods John' in 5x14? Bad enough in the earlier S4 episode where he met Mary. The actor is handsome as hell, but that version of John... is NOT a returned Vietnam vet, and is NOT the man who could become S1 John. It just doesn't work.

Too many of the retcon moments in S5 (and some in S4) made me throw up my hands and say, "I reject your canon. Because apparently, you do too." There was just too much I couldn't make myself believe in.

Including the S5 finale, though it will not be as painful as you're probably thinking. So yes, you should watch it before S6 or you'll be thinking "WTF?" the entire 6x01 premiere. :(

I was referring to the Mary-Dean scene. :) It was really the only memorable thing about the ep. And I agree about the utter ridiculousness of the destiny plot, and the heavy-handed brother parallels. Ugh!

I pretty much liked 15, too, iirc. I don't remember much about any of these, though.

Not to mention the stuff that nearly made me rip the disc out and just beat my head against the wall: the fucking parallels. WHY? WHYYYY? Why can't the show GROW THE FUCK UP, already? Now Heaven and Hell are just reflections of Dean and Sam's big/little brother issue? This issue that is all of a sudden front page news? Now I see why they made such a stink about it in 5x05. Heaven and Hell both have a dog in this race. "Let me grow up!" "Stop being mean to me!" "You pushed me away!" "You left us!" Oh my god, show, get OVER it. I'm so sick of this growing up teen wangst. It feels uninspired and ineffective after watching Dean endure PTSD from actual hell, after watching Sam endure Mystery Spot, after watching them both endure personal tragedy and loss, after watching them make hard, adult decisions. It feels so beside the point, so Very Special Episode via Full House.Dude you nailed it. This is exactly why this season failed so abysmally for me too ( ... )
