I loved Sam's scene with Chuck. It was metatastic, in a really good way -- Sam is having a talk with his writer, and it's like a confessional for him. We needed, at this point, a look into Sam's pov and how he's seeing things and why he's doing what he's doing. I liked having this not too long after him saying Dean was weak in 4x16, and this showed us how that's not arrogance, it's Sam seeing his big brother falter and Sam wants to return the favor of what Dean's always done, Sam wants to be the rock. He's trying ( ... )

I agree about Sam. He's trying to be the rock, only he's so far in denial. It's all the best and worst of his personality coming out this season. And it's beautiful and ugly and just heartbreaking.

future meta stuff

???? :| Oh, god, I hope they don't become like SG-1. Less is more with the meta. It really, truly is, Kripke.

I'M STILL IN CAPSLOCK WHEN I THINK OF DEAN AND CASTIEL. :D That's a good point about how both of them fixed him so he wouldn't be catatonic, first Cas at the beginning and then Douche Yoda.

P.S. CHECK OUT MY SHINY NEW CASTIEL ICON. :D

Uh oh, you got a usericon. The first step on the slippery slipe of character love. <3

This episode was fairly polarizing among the fans, because of the meta aspects. I'm glad you were able to come down on the side of enjoying it. I enjoyed it too, in a cringing-with-my-hands-covering-my-face sort of way -- sly humor and direct shoutouts. TPTB know their fanbase, message received loud and clear ( ... )

I'm surprised at myself, really, because I generally loathe meta, especially such blatant meta. Them meeting a gushing fangirl was cute, but I didn't care for how she was characterized and them knowing about Wincest was a little... I dunno. A little much. But for whatever reason, it worked pretty well for me.

The character stuff makes me love so much about this episode.

YES. I think that's why it works. If it had been a joke episode, or the boys acting out of character to allow for all of the meta jokes, that probably would have made me hate it. But the character work was GORGEOUS. I have nothing but love for it. All of it.

Communication is the problem. And the solution. IF it happens without meddling, and with honesty. Unfortunately, those things appear to be a bit short in supply right now.

So much word.

This is probably an unpopular opinionHeh! Not so unpopular. IIRC most people at TWoP loved it but there were heads exploding all over LJ over the breaking of the fourth wall ( ... )

Oh, yeah. I hate it when the fourth wall is broken, but like I mentioned above, it worked for me this time.

I really do think that a lot of the feeling of character continuity and that sense we have of really know Dean's inner workings comes from Jensen.

Absolutely agree, and it pisses me off, too, that they depend so much on that.

I'm sorry to say this tendency gets worse in season 5.

Yeah, I have to fanwank an awful lot around the whole post-hell trauma thing. :/ When I stop to think of it, it bugs the hell out of me. I couldn't believe they followed up On The Head Of A Pin with It's A Terrible Life. What the fuck?

Having said that, I would have preferred it without the Wincest joke and, while it's the least offensive of the fanservice episodes, I still don't enjoy the way fans are portrayed.

Upon rewatch, I think I agree with you on this more than I originally thought. It was a cute scene where they find the fansite, but it was just so... much. I appreciate it from a Jared and Jensen aspect, but putting Dean and Sam into that scene gives me a headache, and them reacting to Wincest just takes me out of the reality of the show. Which is a pet peeve of mine.

Someone mentioned "future meta." Do they go back to this? :| I didn't particularly care for the publicist/fangirl. I'm not eager to see more...

Yes.

But they don't bring that particular fangirl/publisher back. However, the next one is even more extreme and, uh, bonkers.

One of the problems with this writing team is they find a cute joke, play it well the first time and around and then come back to it and hammer to death so that it's left bloody and twitching on the ground and ruins the original joke retroactively.

Yeah, I've noticed that in the past. :/ Dean's whole eating thing, for one. Good grief.

I'm not looking forward to meeting the next fan. I'm not looking forward to revisiting this meta at all. Once was enough. *sigh*

But then again, I'd hate it if they called him all the time, like a Great-Ash or something. So, yeah. I hate omniscient characters as a general rule. I hope they use Chuck sparingly in the future, or what I dislike about him as a plot device might outweigh what I like about him as a character. The final scene with Douche Yoda makes me uneasy about how they'll use him. :/ Hopefully, they won't pull him out as some Deus Ex Machina. I think I can handle him in Ghostfacer/Wee!Chester doses, but nothing more. Not as prominent as Castiel, Uriel, Ruby or Bobby, that sort of thing. (I would absolutely welcome a spoiler on this front.)

Spoilers in terms of Chuck's future involvement? I'd say you won't have to worry. We will see him again but I never felt he overstayed his welcome or turned into a convenient deus ex machina. In fact, I thought they found some pretty fresh and rather sweet ways of incorporating him.

Yeah I agree with this. Chuck's role worked for me through the series for the most part. There is one thing that I think needed to be explained though and it is a huge thing that Kripke just pretended didn't happen. But I guess I should shut up now 'cuz poor sargraf has no idea what I'm rambling on about. Sorry S. :(
