androgyny in the arts

I should be sleeping. But I just have to throw this question out there.

Am I being completely delusional in believing that androgyny as a concept has been adopted (and subsequently made famous/fashionable by people like David Bowie) as a music/performance and/or fashion style? That it isn't necessarily defined solely by someone being technically genderless, having both male and female organs, or causing people who meet them to think "man or woman"? That a man can look like a man with a 9" cock, for pete's sake, and still have an androgynous performance style? Is "androgynous" the wrong word to use in that case? Should I be using "gender bending"? But isn't that the basic concept of androgyny in the performance arts (and fashion)?

I'm feeling bizarrely at odds with people over this, and would like some feedback, if anyone feels like commenting.
