Chapter 1: Seasons Don't Fear the Reaper.

It was strange, when she thought about it. Ever since she had arrived here in hick-town-nowhere a.k.a 'Sunnydale', Buffy Summers had been plagued by monsters and mysteries. The very thing that got her kicked out of school in L.A. (well, indirectly, at least) was starting to happen here.

Principle Flutie had been less than welcoming once he realized the extent of her 'misdeeds', but really, she shouldn't have expected anything less.

She was cursed after all.

Giles called it being “Chosen”.

Well, the least she could do to lessen her problems would be to get up early and make it to class well before the bell. That way she wouldn't have to run in late, she could call out 'present' when the teacher took attendance and, most importantly, she could Not Be Noticed.

That was very important, Not Being Noticed. It could save her life. Or at least the shambles of her social life.

“Buffy, get up! You're going to be late for school!” Joyce Summers called from the bottom of the stairs as she fixed her earrings.

So much for betting to school on time.

Rolling out of bed, Buffy ran to the bathroom for the quickest shower in recorded history and made a passable, if somewhat homely attempt at putting on her make-up, making it downstairs just in time to grab the now-cold toast her mother had prepared. Skulking to the car, Buffy wondered if this was some kind of omen.

She really shouldn't have asked...

Buffy was late to class, missed role call, got sent to the office for 'making a disturbance' when she dropped her pencil case after showing up late, and she was now the most hideous creature known to walk the earth. How could she have known that her lipstick was last year's shade? Did she have to save the world and read Cosmo?

So much for her social life.

Buffy managed to make it to lunch before heading toward the quiet refuge of the library. Never had she been more eager for 'training' or whatever her slave-driver called it. She could really deal with hitting something right about now. Hitting it hard would be preferable.

A commotion outside the gym in the hall leading to the library drew Buffy in. Pushing her way to the front of the crowd, she was shocked to see a girl,a student her age, lying on the floor full of blood. Elbowing her way to the girl's side, Buffy tried to recall every ounce of training she could muster.

This girl was bleeding badly from her leg and her stomach. Stomach was closer to the heart. Would probably bleed faster. Gotta put pressure on it. Too much blood.

Buffy shouted for someone to get an ambulance as she scooted around the girl, the crowd parting just far enough to let her move. No one wanted to do the dirty work.

Nice.

Buffy realized her jeans were ruined. The blood was all over her knees now, her hands were covered in it.

Whoever had attacked the girl had gone for the total package deal.

So much for Not Being Noticed.

“What's her name,” Buffy asked the crowd, wondering why no one was coming forward. Everyone was crowding around her, but the girl needed air... didn't sick people need air? Buffy couldn't breathe, there were too many people, none of which were helping her keep the girl alive. She had to do something before this girl died...

“You!” Buffy made eye contact with a short, squirrelly boy huddling next to the lockers. “Yeah you. Go get Mr. Giles, tell him to call for an ambulance then get out here.”

The boy stood frozen like a deer in the headlights until Buffy screamed out at him.

“Now!”

The boy dashed off like his pants were on fire.

He was scared. Good. Scared was good. Scared was alive.

“Willow!” Buffy called out to the red-head, hoping that the head of hair poking though the crowd was her friend.

No dice.

“Oh my god!”

With the sound of Cordelia's voice over her shoulder, Buffy felt her stomach sink lower. As if a bleeding girl weren't enough... Maybe she could at least put Cordelia to use.

“Cordelia, I need some help. This girl might die if we don't put pressure on her wounds.”

Buffy didn't miss the look of disgust that crossed the cheerleader's face, but she didn't have time to coddle some pathetic “Miss Teen” wannabe. Grabbing Cordelia's hands and placing them over the girl's stomach wound, Buffy pressed her own hands down until there was enough pressure.

“Stay there and keep the pressure even.” Moving to the girl's leg, Buffy realized there was too much blood.

“Oh my god...”

Not realizing that she had echoed Cordelia's exclamation, Buffy stared at the pale exposed flesh of the girl's thigh. The wound that had been spurting seconds before was now a trickle.

Her heart had stopped beating.

The girl was dead.
