He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich

Kingsford Smith Airport, Sydney. 17.13 local time

Our flight to NZ has been delayed by two hours so we won't arrive in Wellington until about 2am. I am far from overjoyed about this as we have to catch a ferry to go and see my friends on the South Island first thing tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing them and to travelling around New Zealand but hell, what a wrench to leave this fabulous city. We've managed to cram such a lot into a few days but there is so much more left to see just in Sydney, not to mention the rest of this country.

I would like to take this opportunity to mention how wonderful my eddie777 is. I got a bit tired and emotional just now. exhaustion, sunburn, PMT and sadness at leaving are a bad enough combination; factoring Starbucks into the mix was bound to end in tears and it did. Wordlessly, Ed just gave me a loving look and started massaging my achy feet, pausing only to ask if there was anything he could do to make me feel better. He rocks.

We had an absolutely manic day yesterday, visiting the botanic gardens, the opera house, the Art Gallery of NSW (I let Ed do that one on his own as I wanted to spend longer in the gardens) and the aquarium. Having spent almost an hour in front of the tank trying to get some decent shots/film of them, I want a platypus! They are the most gorgeous little creatures! Kind of like otters but sillier. They manage to be graceful while seeming to move almost entirely at random. I bought a cuddly one for K but I ended up getting one for me too - I suspect my chances of getting them through the frighteningly strict customs here are rather better than if I had found myself a real one.

We ended the day yesterday with another meal in the hotel and a 'city night lights' cruise around the harbour where we saw Russell Crowe through the window of his waterside appartment! Poor Russell. He was probably waiting in for me but I just had to turn him down. ;-) This morning we took the ferry to Manly Beach, then came back into town to go to the Australian Museum with my uncle. Catching up with him after about 25 years was one of the highlights of this trip.

So here we are, waiting for a plane. I know New Zealand is going to be fantastic but I can't imagine anywhere living up to the amazing time we've had in Sydney. I'm just glad we're not going straight home, because if I didn't have the next leg of the journey to look forward to I'd be tempted just to do a runner into the bush...
