19. Favorite minor that decided to shove himself into the spotlight and why!

Dan! From Polyfaceted. He started as an unnamed bartender in one story I wrote and evolved into the owner of the Corlionis' major hangout. He has relatives and a backstory now, and frankly, he is awesome. I mean, to deal with the Corlionis on a regular basis requires a ( Read more... )

YAY another asexual protagonist! *dances* I was afraid I was the only one who's got one. Not that he's out yet. I should probably write that. Anyway.

I love having someone else do this meme. It's really enlightening comparing my answers to others'.

Ooh, who? Someone I know? I'm all curious.

It is, isn't it? I like reading all the answers. It's so interesting to me, what goes on in people's minds when they're writing.

I just looked it up, and I think Alex is either grey-A or possibly demisexual. I'm leaning toward the former, since it seems to be a catch-all for just about everything in between sexual and asexual, and I'm pretty sure that fits her better.

You do, but I think I shall keep it a secret until he comes out properly. :D Should be fun. Also, if you have any questions about asexuality or what it's like to be asexual, feel free to ask me. I like talking about myself at great length.

I have a thought about who it might be, but I shall keep it to myself for fear of looking like an idiot in case I'm wrong. In any event, looking forward to the story. =P

Ack no fair ninja-editing when I can't edit comments! Anyway, gray-As and demisexuals are pretty much the same thing; folks with low sex drives or who are sexually attracted to very few people. So you can just pick a term and go with it, AFAIK. I like the sound of "demisexual" better myself.

(and it still counts as an asexual protagonist in my eyes)

Lol, sorry! I can't help my ninja-editing skills. =P

I was just going off the AVEN wiki, and it seemed to distinguish between them slightly, but that's good to know. Demisexual does sound nice. I'm just trying to figure out how this is contextualized in the Kansas City 'verse, since it's set so far into the future--approximately a hundred years, give or take. I figure homosexuality will be a non-issue then, but I'm not 100% sure where asexuality is going to fall.

There are small differences, AFAIK, but they're really tiny, and I think it mostly has to do with whether your sex drive is nondiscriminate or discriminate. Most folks in the ace community use them interchangeably, as far as I've been able to tell.

One would hope asexuality would be a non-issue, but reactions seem to be pretty 50-50 these days. Either people are "oh" and then don't bring it up again, or they're completely confused and you get things like "I don't understand how you can live without sex! Have you ever tried it?" in the most earnest tone ever, which makes me want to punch people. There are a very few people who seem to take "I'm asexual" as a personal insult, a la "how dare you not want the magic of my sexings", but they're fortunately rare. So I don't know. It depends on whether or not sexual people as a whole can start seeing it as a viable orientation.
