NaBloPoMo, day nineteen: "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" by temporaryage.

I've been going back and forth on the subject of whether or not I should recommend a fic by someone I am friends with and have great affection for, because on the one hand, it seems self-indulgent, but on the other, how is it my fault that my friends are awesome writers? Then I decided to reread the fic I was contemplating, and my debate went out the window: this fic is too beautiful for me to not share.

"A Hazy Shade Of Winter" by my friend Caroline (temporaryage), has got to be one of my all-time favorite M*A*S*H fics. It's Hawkeye/Sidney, which is my favorite M*A*S*H pairing because Sidney is my favorite character, and also, I have always been contrary. It's one of two non-canon pairings I can see surviving post-war (Charles/Margaret being the other), which this fic is, something that is difficult to pull off, but spectacular when done right, as is illustrated here.

The story she weaves is beautiful: Hawkeye, after the war, is lost and trying to cling to the last person who made him feel good, with mixed results. Her prose is evocative and poetic, and it makes your heart ache in the best way possible. To this day I can't tell if she spent hours crafting each sentence so every word would be perfect, or if the whole story jumped, fully-formed, from her head to the screen, making it read seamlessly, effortlessly. Either way, the end result is incredible.

If you're a M*A*S*H fan, check this fic out; it's gorgeous, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
