You do not have to overtly call all gay people faggots to be homophobic. You do not have to advocate gay-bashing to be homophobic. You do not have to picket funerals with signs saying God Hates Fags to be homophobic.
Being against gay marriage? Is homophobic. Spreading the idea that gay people are somehow sick, perverted, or immoral? Homophobic. Being against gay adoption? Yes, you guessed it: that is homophobic.
Insidious, subtle forms of prejudice are always the most dangerous. Everyone will condemn the violent, obviously hate-spewing bigot, but the calm, even-mannered person saying that, oh, being gay is a lifestyle choice and we really, really need to safeguard and, ah, affirm the tradition of marriage, well, that's a little harder to spot, isn't it?
Seriously. I don't care how polite you are. If you, in any way, advocate the idea that gay people do not deserve equal rights, you. are. homophobic, and you can go fuck yourself.
