I’m hanging out at my brother’s for the weekend, which is cool. There’s random wireless to steal, so that’s handy. =P We’ve been playing a lot of board/card games and having fun times, plus having a little bit of political discussion to keep things interesting. (I have been forced to watch more Fox News this weekend so far than I have ever watched before in my life. *shudders*)
Since everyone and their brother commented on the Palin nomination, clearly I should share my thoughts (and, hey, my brother’s thoughts as well.) Since he’s the token Republican in the family, I asked him what he thought: he’s not thrilled due to her lack of experience, which is something I just find incredibly funny. McCain has spent how long criticizing Obama about his lack of experience-something that as an avowed liberal I will freely admit is a valid concern in certain areas-and then turns around and picks someone for his VP who has even less experience? Way to make all of that sound totally hollow, dude!
I’m seeing a lot of ‘McCain will clearly pick up Hillary’s supporters now’ and I have to say, um, what? Maybe the fuckwit contingent (the one I don’t think is as large as we’re led to believe because sane people don’t make for good entertainment and thus are not interviewed on TV) that has already declared their intention to vote for him because they are petty and stupid, but beyond that? Uhhh, women in general and most of Hillary’s supporters are not stupid enough to go, “Holy shit! Boobs! I have to vote for McCain now!” (Honestly, I even have my doubts about the fuckwit contingent because it’s my impression that they don’t just want any woman in the White House; they want Hillary there. I would not be the least bit surprised if they simply resented this pick. Of course, they’re crazy fuckwits, so good luck predicting what they’re going to do.)
I’ve also noticed some ‘Be in awe of the progress!’ which is another line I don’t quite swallow. Maybe others don’t think motives matter, but I really do. Frankly, I don’t see this as a great stride for progress and equality. I see this as a cheap political maneuver that insults the intelligence of 50% of the country’s population. Did McCain pick her because he truly thought a first-term governor from Alaska was the absolute best choice for his ticket? Maybe. And maybe my cat will sprout wings and fly away. Have to say, both scenarios strike me as highly unlikely.
Of course, I can’t say it any better than Stephen:
"A lot of people are saying Sarah Palin is being used as a cheap political ploy. That is such petty cynicism. This is historic! For the first time in America, a woman has reached the highest levels of being used as a cheap political ploy!"
Well. Clearly that glass ceiling is going down.
Time to go write...something, since I'm not going to be sleeping for awhile. Not sure what yet. Adios.
