So, I'm still caught up in my Dinah angst. While it's not that I don't believe that she loves Felicity, maybe it's that she doesn't really even know her. (And, you know, the fact that she let her go in the first place.) Granted, Felicity is afraid to really allow the Lances to see who she is, because what if they don't like her, but, I'm sorry, she's the child in this situation; Dinah is the parent. It's Dinah's responsibility to show her that, it doesn't matter who Felicity is, Dinah will still love her. She will always love her. To make matters worse, I have yet to even see a real connection between them, and that's just so sad, because I think Felicity craves that. What's even sadder is how Felicity feels towards her mother. Dinah isn't really her mom; she's her role model, and, while being your children's role model is a part of being a parent, it shouldn't be how your children define your relationship. With every Felicity/Dinah scene, I just come to appreciate Quentin's relationship with Felicity all the more.
Two things struck me about the moments with Sara and Laurel in this chapter: with Laurel, it really doesn't matter if it's canon or AU, she's still essentially the same person. And that's not a slight. It's just, when everything else is broken down, when the details are dismissed, at her core she is such a driven person that it can eclipse everything else. Secondly, with Sara, you have created a much more likeable version of the character - one who tries to be a good sister. (Her apathy towards boy drama was amusing, too, for I don't think we're going to have to worry about all three sisters liking Oliver in this universe.)
Now, onto my bread and butter in this story: Oliver's relationship with Felicity and Lance's relationship with Felicity. Let's tackle the fluff first. Maybe Oliver doesn't really know what he's doing when it comes to taking care of and comforting Felicity, but, from where this girl is slouched and writing, he's doing a damn fine job of it anyway. To comfort someone, you don't have to have the perfect words or the perfect fix-alls; you just need to care, and Oliver does. He was tender, and sweet, and sensitive, but he was all these things without coming across as a pushover or as false, because mixed in with his sincerity was still his own insecurities and his attraction towards Felicity. We could see the teenage boy shining through. My favorite part of their solo interaction was his asking her to let him know if (before) she goes back to Central City... and Felicity agreeing to say goodbye. He's not trying to cage her (though I highly doubt he's thinking goodbye will be in five days), and perhaps this is what will eventually keep Felicity with him when she does attempt to leave.
Can I just say that the Quentin/Oliver comedy routine needs to go on the road. Those two feed off each other with their one liners so wonderfully. They had me snorting several times. I enjoy their back and forth, especially because it shows in a roundabout way just how much they both care about Felicity. I'm thinking this might eventually lead to a grudging respect between the two of them and to them working together to make sure that Felicity is happy/taken care of.
Finally, that scene between Quentin and Felicity slayed me. SLAYED ME. Literally, I had tears. His confession about how she used to silently look for him whenever she was upset so that he could hold her... and then Quentin telling her that he'd still like to be that person for her? Oh my freaking gosh. Let's cancel the vote now, because someone just won himself the Father of the Year award. (I'd also like to just banish the rest of the family and make it the Quentin/Felicity household if I could.)
Anyway, superb as always. :-) Thanks for sharing!
