So, per my usual Thursday night viewing pleasure I watched Supernatural and Smallville, my opinion on tonight's episode ahead...
Smallville: Okay, first of all, can I just say I seriously don't like the Tess/Oliver angle? I don't mind a past, I don't even mind that it may have been romantic, but that they're implying it might still be romantic or may become romance... I just don't like it. I don't mind Tess so much but it actually bothers me more that Oliver seems interested in her after knowing that she's currently standing in place of Lex...
On the Chloe/Clark front, I like that their friendship is staying in tact. I don't think Clark actually approves of Chloe and Jimmy marrying, but he's willing to sacrifice his opinion in favor of making Chloe happy. Which is far too much like Clark. The beginning was promising, with the letter and all. Jimmy finally said something I could agree with: "Why don't you try asking yourself why you've never said any of those things to me?" Uh because her feelings for you aren't anywhere near as intense or strong or anything! What's sad is that it wasn't the end of Chimmy... Because come on, seriously? Do they really expect to last? It just doesn't work. There are too many secrets, too many problems, too many miscommunications, and honestly, I don't think she's really in love with him. And the kiss... Jimmy kissed the she-alien! Yes, he paused, yes, he later felt bad, but he still did it! And she can forgive him all she wants but the second they kissed, that was it. That sealed the coffin for me. Jimmy Olsen can go screw himself. Chloe deserves BETTER!
I liked Clark in this episode - I liked his reaction in the end with she-alien. He wants (needs) someone, a soulmate as they called it, and he's lonely now without Lana, but he didn't sacrifice what he knew was his destiny for a woman who promised him a forever companion. So self-sacrificing, as usual, which I bet will drive Lois crazy in future. I liked the implications in this episode between Clark and Lois; she appeared as though she really knew what the she-alien had to say (forgot her name). And she looked seriously broken when she saw Clark and she-alien (M-something, right?) sucking face. I loved her reaction, Erica did a fantastic job this episode, I think.
So overall, this episode needed some Oliver Queen and Chlollie interaction, but I'll forgive them that. I'll give it a solid 8, I enjoyed it enough and the she-alien had a pretty interesting story-line, while it could've been explained a little more. But a good enough episode, definitely better than last weeks.
Supernatural: I love, love, love Eric Kripe. Seriously! I loved this episode. We got to see some more of Sam using his powers which really rounded out the whole episode by the end. Because he came full throttle. I liked that Dean finally got to see what his brother was doing. I liked him fighting with Ruby - sorry to new!Ruby fans, but I enjoyed her getting knocked around. Yes, she can give as good as she got, which is awesome too. "Obediant little bitch" as Dean called her, and yes she is. She certainly lets Sam call the shots, doesn't she? I have a feeling eventually that'll run thin and she'll turn around on him.
Dean storming the Hotel room (angry!Dean is sexy) and knocking Sammy around. I'm sorry Sam, but I was happy to see it. I felt sorry for him, but at the moment I agreed with Dean and I've wanted to hit him since the season premiere. Dean said something that physically made me hurt for Sam. "If I didn't know you, I'd want to hunt you... And so will other hunters." Jensen Ackles did such an awesome job here, the emotional wobbling of his chin while he tried to stay angry... wow. What he said was true but it's oh so sad! Poor Sam, he looked like a kicked puppy through a lot of this. He has a right, later, to be mad at Dean also, though. Because it's true - Dean doesn't really get what he's going through and he does look at him funny when these powers are brought up. And as Jared said in the comicon, these guys are going to get dark and there's going to be some issues, they've both changed and they've gone through a lot, so they can't get right back to the funny, brotherly-love stuff. It was well done and there's no exact bad guy from the two, so I approve.
I liked the plot this episode. With the good guy gone bad (reminds me of Doomsday) who really didn't want to change but didn't have control over his future. I do wonder what will happen to the unborn baby. Will the wife follow the same path as her husband's mother and put it up for adoption? Or maybe she'll abort or she may in fact keep it and hope for the best. We don't know. And I sort've like that. It's realistic. Not all stories end the way we expect.
I always like it when they bring in other hunters and this one was no different. They've always got very different personalities and this one was strong-headed. In the end, when he was getting ready to burn them all, I didn't know how to feel. And when he was mouthing off to Sam and talking about his as if he wasn't right in the head for believing there was a chance to save the guy, I lost respect for him. But as we've seen throughout Supernatural, we learn that there are hunters that tend to be one-minded (kill, kill, kill) and some of them can come off rather racist. Gordon and the vampires is a good example. Not everything that can be evil, is evil. Sam may have demon blood in him and yes there is always the uncertain future but so far, he's a good man.
I was really happy with Sam's decision in the end, but I can't help but think that he might be making a snap judgment and he'll fall back on his powers later. That he did it for himself and nobody else, I definitely agree with that. Dean's not so comfortable apology was very him and I always feel bad for him when Sam interrupts to tell him "whatever," because it obviously takes a lot for Dean to say what he's saying. A Sammy-tantrum is very first season and they're interesting on occasion. He had reason to this time, so...
In any case, I'll give this episode an 8.8 - I liked it. Needed some Bobby, as usual, and I would've liked some Castiel, but I definitely enjoyed it. Very dramatic, less funny than I'm used to, but a great bit of acting, interesting plot and realistic given all that's happened between the brothers in the last few years!
So that was my TV watching experience tonight. Would love to hear you guys' thought on this!
