~ REID ~

They all bundled off of the plane and back onto solid ground. Once at the office JJ retired to her office to wrap it up before going home. No one would begrudge her this after all she would almost definitely be the first one in the next morning; especially now that Hotch (who had been the other extra-early bird) was going to see Haley. Morgan and Emily went to their desks and talked about what they were going to do on their weekend while they logged into the system. Rossi disappeared to his office as did Hotch but not before calling to Reid to come and see him. Morgan gave him a brief look as if to say ‘you in rouble with the boss?’ but went back to talking about relaxing and mooching on the couch for an entire weekend. Reid made the walk to Hotch’s office feel like a death march, taking a deep breath before entering.

“You wanted to see me?” He said; injecting professional curiosity into his voice and hiding the pain that lurked just below the surface.

“Sit down,” Hotch instructed. “I’m sorry - more sorry than you can know-” Hotch began in a low voice that let Reid know he was breaking up with him at work. “But I’m spending the weekend with Haley and Jack… and… and it may lead to a more permanent situation… with me and Haley.” Considering that Hotch had a lot of experience with giving bad news, Reid noted that he was doing an exceptionally bad job this time.

He looked all around the room not focusing on Hotch’s face, his hands clutching at the brown leather satchel that rested on his lap like it was a lifeline. “What are you going to tell her… about us I mean?” Reid asked; knowing he needed to hear the answer straight from Hotch’s mouth in order to believe this.

“I’m not.” Hotch said, and there was pain and apology in his voice that grated at Reid’s nerves.

“That sounds healthy.” He muttered under his breath; secretly hoping that Hotch heard him but he could not tell either way as Hotch’s face was like a stone carving. “Right,” he said standing up, a fake smile stretched grotesquely across his face, “then I guess I’ll let you get back to living a lie. Goodbye, Aaron.” Reid said and exited his office feeling the burn of Hotch’s eyes on him as he walked out of the building ignoring Morgan’s question about what that had been about. For the next two days and eleven hours he had no contact with any of the team members; instead holing up in his small apartment with crisps and a vial of Dilaudid staring at him the whole time; untouched but an almost unbearable temptation.

Reid had been with the FBI under Hotch’s command for just over five years now and in that time he had never even fantasized about Hotch or actively thought about him as someone he could be with. The man was firstly married and secondly he was straight and his superior. It wasn’t until after Reid had spent the night in Ethan’s arms reliving his teen experiments with the other man that he realised he was in love with Hotch. Well… Ethan realised it. Ethan had listened to Reid talk about his team and in the early morning light he had asked him why he had never told Hotch how he felt. Reid had stuttered and spluttered that he hadn’t known what Ethan had been talking about but a few months later when Gideon left him that note all Reid had wanted to do was curl with in Hotch’s strong arms and sob. He had restrained himself until he had discovered that Haley had left Hotch and then nothing could tare him away from Hotch only in this scenario he hadn’t been crying tears but biting at the tender flesh of Hotch’s neck to try to muffle screams of pleasure. No, nothing had been able to tare him away from Hotch; except Hotch himself.
