Hi
So I have a question that I can't really ask anyone in my life.
Not really a question, just a point I would like to make.
Just been reading the wikipedia entry for 50 Shades and noted that there has been some comments in the past about how the book belittles feminism and that it makes light of violence against women. To me these concepts are stupid. Why does it belittle feminism? Because the woman is the submissive? It's based on a BDSM relationship... of course one of the characters is going to be submissive, and therefore there is a fifty fifty chance of it being the female. Get over it. Being a submissive in the bedroom is not about giving up free will in the rest of your life, and in a true BDSM relationship the submissive and the dominant are equals even if that equality manifests itself in different ways than mainstream relationships. Besides the BDSM relationship in the book isn't exactly healthy... as in Christian clearly has issues. But if they want to argue that feminism is offended because of the way the book is written and how Ana and Christian interact then fine, as long as they don't say that women cannot be submissives because thats' just bullshit.
Sorry for the swear word.
As for the violence part... well people who say that don't understand the consensual BDSM relationship. Which has already been pointed out.
Feminism makes me angry. Which is stupid. I should be a feminist really, after all I'm a twenty-two year old university educated woman who identifies herself as Wiccan and is single with a plan to find a career in order to make enough money to live self-sufficiently on.
But I don't.
Look, feminism is great. Woman should have the vote everywhere, no one should be disregarded based on where their sexual organs are and equal pay is something that needs to happen yesterday because it's just a giant insult. But I don't believe feminism should go beyond equality. Woman shouldn't big themselves up to be superior to men. We're all just people. Women and men have different strengths and weaknesses, and society needs to adjust its attitude and get with the 21st century already, but everyone - white, black, asian, mixed race, female, male, gay, straight, bi, transgender, tall, short, fat, thin... we all just need to except others and celebrate being human.
Wow did this get away from me!
Anyway, just adding that sinec 50 Shades is pretty badly written - not surprising since it started out as Twilight fan fiction (sorry guys!) - I'm really looking forward to see what Xanthe produces. At least if her story gets published no one can claim its sexist because both the characters are male. Plus she is an awesome writer so I know she won't let us down.
PS. I'm only half way through 50 Shades Darker. Probably should calm down until I finish the books. LOL.
