Fulfilling a Dream?

Jul 12, 2011 22:01

When we were little, and going through one of our brief phases of not hating each other, my brother and I used to plot.  We used to plan.  We used to come up with the most brilliant ideas about how to become independently wealthy while doing work that we loved, and doing it together.

In retrospect, most of those plans were pretty far-fetched, but not all of them.

You see, my brother is an amazing artist.  For my last birthday, I asked him to design my next tattoo, and I will be proud to be inked with his work (as soon as I have the money).  He is also a designer, a photographer, and an engineer.  I have pages upon pages of houses and cars that he began designing 25 years ago.  So, one of our reasonably plausible plans was for him to design and build homes, and for me to become an interior designer, so that we could sell the homes to a client's specifications or have completely finished and furnished homes ready to go.

I don't think that's ever going to happen.  He started out in engineering, but changed his path fairly early in his college career.  Now, in light of a potential new degenerative eye disorder, I am not sure how much more of his amazing works I'll ever see, even on paper.

But, I find that I am fulfilling my portion of our plot in my own fashion.  Now that a few years have passed since my parents split, my mom finds herself ready to let go of some things that remind her of what was, which seems to include much of how our house is decorated.

It started last summer with stripping the border in the living and trusting me to choose our new furniture pattern (which she loves) despite her reservations.  Then, I redid my bathroom last fall.  Memorial day weekend, I got to attack the dining room, AKA the bane of my existence.  This is a big part of the reason that I have once again been absent from LJ.

I'll continue this story tomorrow, and hopefully have some before and after pics to share.
