“So where are the demons?” Alec asked with uncertainty. When Magnus had said that he had some information on a rising group of demons - and any cooperation was worrying - he had not expected a picturesque park to be meeting place. The warlock in question stood in front of him in bright red leather pants that were distractedly tight fitting and a sparkling purple top. His eyes were rimmed with the usual shining eyeliner, mascara and eye shadow. Today each shade was a variation on gold, which brought out the brightness of his cat-like eyes that were shining with mischief.
“What demons?”
“The demons you called me about.”
“It’s noon in an open park, why would there be demons here?” He smiled, far too amused by Alec’s frustration as he took in with more detail Magnus’s appearance. He carried with him two baskets, one he treated with more care than the other. This was soon explained as he set it on the ground reverently and a disgruntled Chairman Meow butted his head out of the top. “I thought we might have a picnic.” Then without waiting for Alec’s response he set about putting the blanket on the ground. Given that all the food was laid out and Chairman Meow in his place of honour before Alec had closed his gaping mouth this was probably a wise decision.
Without any other options, Alec sat down cross-legged on the ground, his stiff posture entirely at odds with Magnus’s relaxed sprawl. “Geeze, Alec, relax. It’s a picnic for goodness sake.” He popped a grape into his mouth, maybe a bit more seductively than was necessary. Again realising he had very few options, Alec lay down in a position that mirrored Magnus, propped up on one elbow.
“What’s the occasion?” Alec asked, daring to sample some of the more extravagant dishes.
“Need there be an occasion? You said you’d never had a picnic before.”
“True, but for you there is always and occasion. And if there isn’t, you invent one.”
He looked down and toyed with his food “It may be my birthday.”
“WHAT?”
“It’s my birthday.”
“But we don’t have cake and I didn’t get you a present.” He seemed distressed by the idea. Unusually so.
“Is that all that matters about birthdays?”
“It’s just…when I was a kid…my birthday was the one day that was…mine. My parents always set it aside as the day no-one went out after demons, no-one got hurt, no-one died. The only day that was normal. With all the trimmings like presents and cake.”
Magnus smiled. “Well that’s the difference between us, then. Every day is about me!” His eyes glinted again. “And who said we didn’t have cake.”
He delved impossibly deep into the second wicker basket (by this point Alec decided that he had magically increased the interior space) and pulled out a sugary creation so delicate and intricate that it couldn’t have existed without the help of magic. He divided it into two pieces and they ate in content silence, the fine crystals melting on their tongues.
The sun was setting, faint fairy lights winking to existence in more densely wooded areas of the park, before either of them spoke again.
“You still haven’t got a present.” Alec pointed out.
“Well, there was a reason I didn’t tell you in advance.” Magnus smirked.
“And what is that?”
“Well, there’s only one thing that you can give me without notice…”
They smiled.
