Because I like adult side characters and their understated angst. ^_^

Drop Ball
Eleven years is a long time to keep scanning newsprint, awkwardly querying old teammates. Urgency dwindles: I've learned what Souju taught me, I've thanked him and apologized in my heart. Time and discipline have cloaked pain in serene reserve.
Tougo's as shocked as Yuuko Katori to find himself gripping her shoulders, demanding confirmation of the ghost she's raised. Even stepping off the bus alongside Matsushita's building, he barely believes it.
Gazing through rain at lighted second-floor windows, Tougo remembers despair. Then he mounts the stairs. Every other step brings him closer to tonight.
Dare I, now?
He smiles, and knocks.
Explanation of title: I (the soccer-illiterate) browsed the
Soccer Glossary for a relevant concept and came up with this:
Drop ball: Restart in soccer, used when a match has been stopped in the case of emergency.
Will be cross-posting to relevant communities.
