I have one of your requests sitting on my computer, all ready to post ^_^. It only just/kinda/not really follows your request, and technically I'm not supposed to post it for a couple of days, but I'll give it a quick edit and post it now ^^.
Ah! I bought a copy of The City of Ember a while back, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet--how did you like it?
*grin* I got book nine of Fruits Basket this afternoon, but I got up to the chapter where we learned who the guy Uotani had a crush on is and went "wah" and had to put it aside for a little while. (Though, I should have suspected as soon as he didn't give his last name....)
I haven't heard of 50 Rules for Teenagers, but I'll keep a look out for it.
City of Ember is great! Believable world and characters. I wish there were a longer version of it, with Doon and Lina a little older...it seemed like it went too fast. But at least there's a sequel, which I've just begun (The People of Sparks).
And so far as Fruits Basket is concerned--one of the things I both love and hate about Natsuki Takaya is her penchant for those tantalizing hints. At this point in the manga, I'm *still* not sure what gives with Yuki, Kyo, and the baseball cap incident with Tohru.
It's sooo tempting to look for the low-down on this Kureno dude, but I'll nobly(?) refrain from spoilering myself.
Ground sure is crawling with Sohmas, though, isn't it?
Ahh, shibby. I'll move it higher up in the to-read pile. *grin*
That blasted hat. I'm waiting for the hat to get a name, since it's got as much of a backstory as some of the other characters, and nearly as much screentime. The new student council members are strange, too.
Seriously. *grin* I'm starting to think the Sohmas founded that city or something. One in every twenty people seems to be part of the family.
But if Doon and Lina were older, it might not have been as appropriate for the teacher to read to Doodle's 5th grade class...and then he wouldn't have had the pleasure of hearing it!
Did I complain to you about all the "dark" stuff he got this year though? It's just kind of funny. The Giver...The City of Ember...Hatchet...and in their "purple book" (daily readings with questions), topics like an old couple in the projects who kept getting mugged; the rugby (?) team that plane-crashed in the Andes and some members had to resort to cannibalism to stay alive; the sinking of the Lusitania; A dad who disowned his son for years and years; a pigheaded submarine pilot who wouldn't listen to his crew's warnings of impending disaster; and on and on! The teacher did say she was awed at all the deep and insightful discussion that came out of it, so that's good, anyway.
You don't hafta whittle if you don't wanna. Just babble on like I did and clump 2 or 3 or more in each category, or list the runners-up. Hee hee.
Interesting--of all the Rosemary Suctcliff books, Knight's Fee is hardly on my radar screen. Dawn Wind is first (it has a GIRL in it!!!), then Warrior Scarlet, then maybe The Shield Ring since it was the first one I read (by many, many years--pre-Swarthmore vs. Swarthmore, basically). Then perhaps the Roman ones or Roman Britain ones. I think it was partly the age I read them though, and Knight's Fee was pretty late.
Aww shoot, I forgot to list Arthur Ransome on my catch-all British children's books list (under the runners-up). I just remembered him because I'm picturing the shelf in the 3rd floor bedroom and he shares with Rosemary, I think. Between the two of them they take up the whole shelf, or practically. No wonder I probably have thousands.
How come nobody fills my requests on fic_on_demand? Are they *that* unpalatable?
We-ell, I've seen maybe one or two episodes of 'Waking the Dragons', so much as I'd have loved to write that one, I felt very inadequately informed for it. As to the Utena one, well ... I don't think writing a cross-over with another serie's the best way to step into a new fandom-territory. Especially not when the request comes with such a 'wow'-inspiring sample of what you did with the plotbunny yourself. ^^;
