So, remember yesterday when there was a giant series of thunderstorms that tore through Grand Rapids for about six hours? Yeah... about that... It's crazy here. Our power (and that of everyone at least a mile or so north of us) got knocked out around 2:30 yesterday and it hasn't come back on yet. Luckily there is power at work.

My family sat around and played Scrabble for a long time last night by candlelight, which no one will ever play with me when there is anything else to do because I almost always win. Water started dripping down the wall and into the fireplace when the metal hood on top of the chimney blew off, but we couldn't do anything about it because none of us are stupid enough to climb on the roof in gusting winds, darkness, and hail. And that was the limit of our excitement for the night.

I'm glad I do not live in a time before electricity, although I suppose one would be used to it in that case.

I woke up at 6 and was still five minutes late to work (as usual) because several stoplights were out too. There are branches everywhere. Little ones, big ones, even whole trees in places. To get to work I drive by two streets that are under construction, both on hills, and both have the street completely torn up. All the loose dirt washed away and down the hills, so for blocks there is nothing but mud all over the street.

It kind of looks like it's going to rain again, so wish GR good luck and let's hope we don't wash away.
