Somehow my sister managed to get tickets to an advance showing of Sweeney Todd, so Claire and I went tonight to see it. Not knowing the story line, I did not know what to expect. I must say I will never look at a straight razor or a meat pie the same way ever again.
Johnny Depp was a wonderfully creepy demon barber--he looks the part--although if this were a stage production no one would be able to hear his voice. He does a pretty good job but you can tell the power just isn't there--even in the movie at times the orchestra makes it hard to understand him. Granted, I was sitting about four feet from the speaker since we got there late and were in the front row, so that might not be an entirely accurate analysis.
It's really obviously a Tim Burton film too (if the presence of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, who are in freaking EVERYTHING of his, didn't tip you off). The opening montage is very weirdly similar to the one in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, except with blood and meat pie instead of chocolate. Claire's main complaint was that the blood was the wrong color, but I think that since everything else is so dark and dreary it probably looked too bright just because of the contrast.
In retrospect, I also want to know how she knew the blood was the wrong color... just who have you killed lately, sister? Hahah.
