Cherry tries not to stare. But she can't help it once the boy starts to sing. The husky and rather unique voice that rings out inside the echoing walls of the chapel is rather hard to take in nonchalantly.

The owner of the beautiful voice is hard to ignore as well. His name, Kim Junsu, matches him so well that Cherry feels self conscious about her own name.

'What kind of name is Cherry anyway?' she thinks to herself.  She draws a mental picture of herself in her head. Tall, bony, and lanky is what she is. Not cute and round like a red ripe cherry. 'My parents are failures at naming children' she thinks morosely.

The other girls in the choir are listening to Junsu practice his solo as well. Some giggle at the way his voice is so soft, high pitched, and at the same time husky.

"It's weird for a boy" they say. But Cherry thinks it's perfect.

Junsu's eyes sparkle when he sings, as if he's gained the whole world when he lets his vocal cords go free and do their thing. Cherry's pretty sure that her eyes sparkle the same way when she hears Junsu sing. That boy has taken hold of her complete attention. So she doesn't notice when her friend, Gina passes her a small folded piece of paper.

After a poke or two, Cherry looks up at Gina. Gina looks suggestively down at the paper, which now sits on Cherry's lap.

It's a ripped corner of a college ruled notebook paper. Cherry unfolds it to find the big block letters on the top.

"HOT OR NOT?" it says.

Underneath, there are a series of names. All boys, Cherry notes. Then, she looks closer. There lies all the names of the choir boys. A certain "Junsu" stands out in Cherry's eyes and she unconsciously blushes.

Gina hands her a pen. Cherry notices that several girls have already put a "hot" or "not" next to each boy's name. Next to Junsu, there are a string of "hot"s. There is one "not", and for some reason, Cherry's whole face burns with anger at this sentiment.

It's stupid, Cherry knows. Because what does Junsu care? Kim Junsu probably doesn't even know Cherry's stupid name. Still, Cherry can't shake off the rising anger.

"Who wrote this?" Cherry whispers to Gina.

Gina shakes her head.

The choir master, Mrs. Lee, is a monster when it comes to knowing who is whispering during practice. If she catches you, she will throw you out in front of all the other kids.

Cherry decides to take a risk to defend Junsu's name.

"Who?"
Cherry's insistance gets a sigh from Gina. Gina ends up pointing at Madeline Go, a pretty girl with huge eyes and long lashes. She is wearing a baby blue dress that has laces on the short sleeve caps. She looks like a modern day princess.

Cherry scowls.

"Who wrote this?" This time, Cherry points to the "not" next to Kim Junsu's name. Cherry tries to be flippant.

As if she just wants to know who the pen belongs to, as if she just wants to know who's penmanship the small little "not" belongs to.

Gina shakes her head again. This time, she really doesn't know.

"Just fill it out and pass it on" whispers Gina. This earns a glare from Mrs. Lee and the both of them shut up.

Cherry looks back down at the folded paper. Taking it upon her to defend and protect no matter what -- though Kim Junsu will probably never take a glance at this paper -- Cherry defiantly crosses out the single "not" next to Junsu's name.

Cherry goes on to write a "hot" in capital letters, huge compared to the other girls' handwriting, next to Junsu's name. Cherry smiles satisfactorily as she looks down at the crumpled little paper. She doesn't even consider the other names.

Folding back up carefully, Cherry turns to pass the paper on. However, just as she does, Junsu's singing stops. His solo is over. And at the same time, Cherry realizes that there is no one else. She's the end of the line. There's no one else to pass the note to.

Feeling a little defeated, she dumbly holds onto the paper. It crinkles a little in her grasp and especially, because the chapel is now silent, the sound is abrasive in Cherry's own ears.

Mrs. Lee announces the next date and time for the next choir practice, not forgetting to send another warning glance to both Gina and Cherry before she dismisses them.

Everyone files out silently. Once they exit the chapel doors though, the loud chatter of boys and girls alike ring out in Cherry's ears. Gina's laughing about the way Madeline Go's dress is folded and wrinkled in the back for sitting for so long. When Gina points it out, Cherry starts to laugh as well.

But then, there's a tap on Cherry's shoulder.

She turns.

"Oh!"
Cherry's eyes haven't widened in surprise because they are pretty small still. Instead, they've hardened, unwilling to pivot from their focus.
It's Kim Junsu.

He smiles shyly then extends his hand out. Cherry looks down.

It's the folded paper, college ruled.

"You dropped this" Junsu says with his melodious voice. "Err...I think it's yours."

He smiles uncertainly when Cherry doesn't take it.
Inside, Cherry's shaking. Has he read it? Does he know?

But Junsu's not like that. He's not one to snoop through other peoples' notes or letters. So Cherry smiles and takes the lightly folded paper with a shuddering hand.

"Thanks" she says. Then, she pauses for a second to think. She adds, "You have a wonderful voice."

At that, Junsu smiles wide, showing his white and perfect teeth.
He laughs bashfully.

Eu kyang kyang kyang!

"Thank you, Cherry. That means a lot to me."

Junsu walks away, leaving Cherry standing at the same spot he's tapped her shoulder. She has this silly grin on her face and, when Gina finds her, Cherry's giggling softly by herself.

"What's wrong? What happened?" Gina asks. She knows of Cherry's secret crush, except it's not so secret when she's looking like this.

"He knows my name" Cherry says softly.

"What?" Gina asks.

"My name" Cherry repeats. "He knows..."
The smile on Cherry's face grows and for once, Cherry doesn't think her parents are such failures after all.
