In addition to today's other significance, it's a day of great importance to the well-dressed Southern woman: today's the day you can start wearing white shoes. Yeah, I know, up north it's Memorial Day, but down here it's been in the eighties for three months by then, so Easter is the starting line, pretty much throughout the southern US.
It may be only Texas, however, where today is also the day you put up your felt cowboy hat, and get out your straw. :)
