blankets:
they have all of the qualities that I most value: they are warm and inviting, they signify security and comfort, and most have their own distinctive smell.

books:
for many of the same reasons as blankets. books take me to new places, answer all my questions, give power to the powerless, open windows, and generally save the world. they offer salvation of every kind.

e.e. cummings:
he says it all and he says nothing at all and I love his rhythm and time.

gardens:
the ability to grow and sustain fascinates me, and I want to be a grower and a sustainer (of life and many other things, too).

hiking:
wind blowing, muscles singing, cedar dying and baking on the trail, sunlight filming, dust coating, amazing reverie.

iron & wine:
the softest, most gentle murmur from loving lips to a longing soul. that is what sam beam does with his music.

jane austen:
the gentle feminist. it's always painfully obvious when I'm just coming off of an austen binge because I become ridiculously literary and extremely verbose (I watched P&P last night).

josh ritter:
I love the feeling of mutual experience and communal memory. listening to him sing about places I know intimately and the emotions that are inevitably attached brings the most glorious nostalgia. we could be best friends someday.

leaving:
of all my passions and pursuits, this is the hardest to explain. there's something so independent and self-sufficient about being able to leave and move on; to start a new life whenever I need to. saddest of all though, is the life I leave behind.

libraries:
they are meccas and temples and sanctuaries of thought and exchange. if I could move in, I would. but working there forty hours a week is sweet solace and the most deeply fulfilling part of my day.
