Arthur bites down on the urge to ram his head into the wall by thinking of how Mal would resurrect him from the dead to rail at him for ruining her wallpaper. It helps, but not much. “If you are not planning on getting anything, Mr. Eames,” he grits out, instead, “please move out of the line.”

“Darling,” Eames says, the corner of his eyes crinkling, “you wound me so very much.”

Arthur scowls. “Are you getting anything?”

Eames sighs but answers Arthur’s question anyway. “What’s popular this festive season?”

“It depends,” Arthur tells him, frowning. “Who is it for?”

“Well,” Eames drawls, “let’s say hypothetically that I am trying to get a present for this man I am having a crush on and have been wooing relentlessly for the past two months.” He pauses at Arthur’s deepening scowl to give him his most innocent look. “What would you suggest I get him?”

Arthur groans mentally. If he kills Eames to well, let’s say to protect his own sanity. That is self defense, right?

“Well?” Eames prompts.

“If you have been wooing the same person relentlessly for the past two months and the guy does not seem to return your feelings, I think it might be wiser to not get him anything for Christmas.” Arthur tries to reason. He can already feel the beginnings of a throbbing headache coming up, but he ploughs through because Eames needs to hear this. “In fact, I think it would be a really good idea for you to stop pestering him.”

Eames looks crestfallen.

Arthur feels a sudden surge of guilt. “Just, hypothetically, you know?” he says, a lot gentler, feeling awkward all of the sudden.

“I don’t know if I know how to stop,” Eames confesses, voice low. “I just really like him. I know he persists on thinking it’s all a joke and whatnot, but it’s not.”

“Eames,” Arthur says with a sigh, “you don’t know me.”

“I could get to know you,” Eames argues. “You just have to give me a chance to. I won’t wear my paisley jacket if you hate it so much, I promise.”

Arthur manages to crack a grin. “It’s an absurd jacket. I don’t know why anyone would wear it. It makes me want to gouge my eyes out.”

“I do it mostly to see if I can make you laugh,” Eames admits with a sheepish grin.

Arthur snorts. “I think you’ve manage to achieve the exact opposite.”

Eames shrugs. “At least I tried?”

Arthur thinks of his options. He can tell Eames to piss off. He is quite sure that the man will finally take his advice this time and move on, since he has pretty much laid things down very clearly for him.

He can also agree to go out on one date with Eames. Eames. Who is infuriating and mouthy but smart and so fucking attractive.

He weighs his options carefully.

“Candy canes,” he says finally.

Eames arches an eyebrow in question.

“For your crush,” Arthur explains. “I think he would like candy canes. But only the peppermint flavoured ones.”

Eames’ wide grin almost bowls him over.
