In a flash, the sword that he picks up from the ground falls back to where it came from and then Morgana is training her sword at him, her eyes hard and her stance firm.

“What are you going to do?” Merlin pants slightly. “Kill me?”

He doesn’t mean for it to sound like a challenge, but it comes out sounding like one anyway and this becomes the first time in which Merlin wishes that he were more articulate.

Morgana smirks. “You don’t think I can?”

A small part of him is shocked that Morgana has changed so much and the rest of him just cannot believe that he was stupid enough to trust her when she first came back. “Might as well make it quick,” he says.

She swings her sword at him but Merlin ducks anyway at the last moment, picks up the sword lying on the ground and blocks her attacks.

“Is that the best you’ve got?” Morgana calls out gaily, teasing him even as her sword brushes his arm dangerously.

“You haven’t seen anything yet,” he grits out before he attacks.

She blocks his attacks almost too easily and laughs. “On the contrary,” she murmurs, “I think I’ve seen enough to know that you’re utterly useless in battle.”

He narrowly avoids her hit and mutters, “Oh yeah?”

Morgana nods and says conversationally, “Arthur talks about you sometimes.”

“Good things, hopefully?” he asks, keeping his voice even so that she doesn’t know how much the fight is straining him.

He almost cannot believe that they are actually managing a proper conversation during battle, but then again it is progress, considering the fact that she was threatening to have him killed the last time they talked.

Merlin is distracted when she laughs again, all of the sudden. And this time she almost jabs him in the chest with his sword but she pulls back and Merlin manages a small smile. She could have killed him, he knows that, but she didn’t.

“You fight like a girl’s petticoat,” she snarls at his smile and Merlin cannot help it, he laughs.

She isn’t as heartless as she would like him to think.

“Maybe I do,” he replies, grinning, “But at least I’m not dead.”

Morgana’s eyes thin and she trains her sword at him, instructing him to do the same with a clipped nudge of her head. “No, you’re not,” she murmurs and Merlin knows it will start all over again, “Not yet.”
