The story is about the characters and the world, and is about my thoughts on fantasy, as the title implies. Elliot is designedly at a remove from the action, because that's what I wanted to do with the story: examine the interstices around the noble warriors and their battles, look at what it would be like to be trained for and have the aptitude for something else but necessarily have the main narrative of a militaristic fantasy society shaping your story. So that's what I'm going for.
I am certainly short on time, but this is going to be a book-length story, so I am spending lots of time on it and obviously wish to develop the story (I'm spending more time on it than I should, since it is a free story and I should do my paid work. ;)). But it's totally fair to want a different sort of story and I'm sorry if it's not developing in the ways you wish for--a lot of the books I listed as fantasy influences in Part 1 do have more traditional narratives: http://sarahtales.livejournal.com/209287.html (I will also put in a word for Lloyd Alexander, who really should've been up there) and you might like them more!
