Apologies for not being around or commenting much lately. I have been reading everything. I know I'm not much of a great commenter in the first place, but it's been worse lately. But I bring gifts!

Uni's been driving me slowly crazy in a I'm-really-surprised-I-haven't-snapped-yet kinda way. It's getting incredibly overwhelming and I feel like I have no time to do anything. I've been comforting myself with music on long bus rides. And I just bought new headphones for my ipod because the old ones were no longer sounding great. The new ones possibly have better sound quality than any headphones I've had before and it's like a small piece of heaven.

Consequently I now have a bunch of songs I am currently very in love with and felt like sharing.

From the latest Triple J Hottest 100 Compilation

Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man
This came in at number one. It was leaked a few days before the countdown, but it was really no surprise because pretty much everyone I knew who voted, voted for this song. Their album was the first one in a long time I was able to listen to on repeat without getting sick of it. Little Lion is definitely the standout song for me. They're folk/bluegrass, and they have a banjo which should make me run the other way but it actually makes it sound really good.

Middle East - Blood
Came in at 62. Middle East is an Australian band. They're from Townsville (which I know has meaning for some of you). Kinda a softer, folk rock sound. I am so in love with this song I am planning on tracking down the whole album at some stage.

Paul Dempsey - Ramona was a Waitress
Came in at 32. Paul Dempsey is the lead singer for Something for Kate, but he released a solo album last year. I was minor fans of Something for Kate, but I've been really loving his solo stuff so much more. He has a gorgeous voice.

Metric - Help, I'm Alive
Came in at 26. Canadian indie/rock. They've been around for a while. I've previously been obsessed with the song Monster Hospital.

Jamie T - Sticks 'n' Stones
Came in at 14. British indie/rock. My friends were addicted to this before I was. I thought it was okay, but after a few listens it grew on me a lot and now I want to track down the whole album.

Previous Triple J Hottest 100

Kanye West - Love Lockdown
Came in at 89 in 2008. I've never been into Kanye West's music at all (Golddigger really grated with me, until Glee did a cover of it and even then I wasn't too fond of it), and really didn't like the guy after that Taylor Swift incident. But this was hanging around in my collection because it was on a Hottest 100 list, and after a listen or two realised I actually really liked it. I don't think I'll be searching out anything else of his anytime soon though.

Other

Florence + the Machine - Girl With One Eye
I love this band a lot. Florence has type of red hair I am absolutely obsessed with and want for myself. I do have some reservations though, because about 2 of the songs when you listen to the lyrics too closely rather disturb me. But otherwise, love the sound. They had about 4 songs on the latest Hottest 100, and I listened to them a lot, but once the hype drew down, this was the song I found I listened to quite a bit.

Dolly Parton - Jolene
Okay, so completely not what I'd think I'd listen to. But it's on the Whip It soundtrack (very good compilation by the way) and I got completely addicted. But it sounds more indie folk/rockish than too countryish. At least as far as my limited skills can tell.

The Ettes - Crown of Age
Also from the Whip It Soundtrack. Very bouncy rock. This song makes me want to dance and jump up and down a lot. Garage punk rock sort of sound.

Katy Steele - Every F**king City
From the Before Too Long - Paul Kelly Tribute Compilation. Katy Steele is the lead singer of Little Birdy, but she went solo for the Paul Kelly cover. I love a lot of Paul Kelly's earlier songs where he manages to tell some heartbreaking stories with some heartbreaking music. I'd never heard this one before I got the compilation but fell in love with it. It's basically about someone following someone they like over Europe. I was incredibly disappointed that the second CD didn't have the Paul Kelly original on it like most of the others covers had.

Laura Marling - Goodbye England (Covered in Snow)
One of my most played artists. I was in love with her first album and got the new one almost as soon as it came out. Just as gorgeous if not more so. She's pretty young (around 19 or 20 I think) and manages to have some truly beautiful songs and lyrics. It makes me feel small in comparison.

Justin Vernon - Hazleton
Bon Iver under a different name. Lovely quieter indie sound. The type of song I like to lay down and relax to.

The Mountain Goats - Up The Wolves
This is the song that got me addicted to this band. Indie folk. There's some interesting references to mythology in there that I think was partly what attracted me to it in the first place. They even did a collaborative album/ep thing with Kaki King.
