While I was having dinner away from the picket lines today, apparently a newsflash reached the lines: The TWU bargaining committee and TELUS reached a tentative deal.
When I returned from dinner, one of my comrades on the line told me the good news. However, being a skeptic, I laughed at him and flat out told him I didn't believe him, which was true. He shrugged his shoulders and said, 'Ask anyone else here on the line.'
Sure enough, everyone on the line confirmed his story. A tentative deal had been reached, which meant we could be back to work as early as October 23rd.
I'm ecstatic to hear this news. TELUS finally blinked. I guess when it came to release those 3rd quarter results, they finally saw the impact the lockout has created.
Now, even though our Union bigwigs are recommending we accept this deal, I'm still skeptical. Due to the gag order, no union member will know anything about the contract offer other than it's a 5 year deal, provides the company with the flexibility they need to remain competitive, and the bigwigs support it, which means it must contain the contracting out language we need to protect our jobs. Until I get my personal copy of the offer in the mail and read it through, I am not holding my breath.
But hey, at least we've gotten somewhere.
In other news: Flames choked again, 7 - 3. Oh well. Just getting off on the wrong foot on their first road trip. No big deal.
