I am a programmer.
That's a job title that most people in the IT industry try to avoid with all their ingenuity. And considering that we are talking about programmers, the amount of effort that has been applied to the task is considerable. They say "I'm a developer" or "implementor" or "systems analyst" or "systems integrator" or any of a myriad other ways to describe what they really do, which is to give a machine some logical set of instructions to perform. (Or not-so-logical, considering some of the programs I've seen in my life.)
But *I* am a programmer. I wouldn't go so far as to state that I am a *real programmer*, but darn it, I do like programming!
I came to this realisation again this week, when they sent me on a training course to learn Java. OoOOOOOoooh! It is so exciting to learn a new language which I can use to make machines go "Hello World!" No, really. Really.
Of course, these programming courses are designed to make you fall in love at first sight, but - in case you were wondering - no, I haven't quite lost my mind. The one thing I *really* *really* liked about it was the fact that you are very much forced to do good class design up front. This will help SO much with my project leader, who believes in dumping a variable wherever the hell it pleases him to dump it that that day.
*dreamy sigh*
Am I going to use this new-found knowledge any time soon? Nope. Just one of those courses I got sent on, because the new management has decided we must all go on the course.
Time for a Sunday snooze, methinks.
