So James and Ed found my journal, which is going to lead me to lock it up from now (or at least everytime I mention them.) Because they are losers (and also university always seems to get dull late afternoon) they started to read it all starting from the very beginning. James even has a file on his computer where he has cut and posted the most ( Read more... )

OK, let's slow down.

First of all, I'm glad (read: I hope) we're now all in agreement about the 'unlocked entries' issue, and that it is now off the table. With reference to most of the subsequent replies, I was defending a viewpoint that I happen to be a little passionate about.

Next, the file was created with Sarah in the room. It doesn't actually bother her.

I asked at the start of my comment, "When did this turn into an immature insult-slinging battle?" Perhaps my comment was an over-reaction. I was annoyed that my time and effort in arguing against an annoyingly widespread point of view had resulted in a one-line sardonic question. But I believe I was justified in slinging crass insults around as soon as they were thrown at me.

As far as the insult itself, the point is very much not that she will not care about the insult. If she doesn't care, it perhaps will not even be perceived as an insult. Also, obviously the insult is going to be made from my point of view and not hers - that's what makes it insulting.

"You seem like a reasonably intelligent guy [...] so you should know better than [the aforementioned insult]." Disregarding that that is an obvious contradiction, I'm glad to get some recognition that my comments - bar the insults, which I didn't think were that stupid, but I'll let it go &mdash actually had something worth replying to.

"your wriring [sic] is a little too faux-academic". Anyone talking to me should quickly develop a sense of irony/sarcasm/parody. Throwing this back in your face, though, nice faux-academic use of 'faux' there.

"don't worry, though; you'll grow out of that". I don't appreciate the down-talking just because you've completed some four-year degree somewhere.

James

p.s. I hope you appreciate my attempt at slightly less pompous prose.

I do! Yay, contractions! Also, congrats on catching my typo. I knew you would! You are truly the man.

My sense of irony is fully intact, thanks! I simply detected, in your earlier posts, the same thing you accuse me of doing -- down-talking, and deliberately avoiding contractions and therefore sounding oddly formal in an attempt to... intellectually bully, maybe, whoever you're talking to. I fully admit I often do this myself when arguing with strangers on the Internet, but it's still not cool.

Finally, believe me, I'm not that proud of the degree. It hasn't exactly helped me much in real life, and it took me a while to (mostly) shake the academic, pompous writing style favored by my snobby little university.

(Oh, but I can use the word "faux" if I like, because I'm Canadian, and Canada is a bilingual country! French is practically my first language!!!!1 ...Okay, truthfully, I just like the word better than I like "false." So sue me. ;))

Anyway, I don't have any problem with you, dude. I just can't manage to sit by and watch people insult my friends. What can I say? It's a character flaw. ;)
