to wait
to feel your ribs pressing against mine
and a hollow ache of someone knocking in the vault of my stomach
the minute hand of my watch seems frozen
all of life's processes stopped
there is no birdsong or car engine
the world grows slack
silence reigns yet my pulse is leaping like a frightened stag
I sit at the window
searching every movement on the street
atomizing each face for the resemblance of my beloved
a flash of dark hair sends me into ripples of delight
then disappointment
as I realize it belongs to a stranger
time after time my senses signal and then betray me
