Pure Musical Bliss

Jun 17, 2006 15:51

Yesterday I experienced pure musical bliss. I was sitting in the hot sun on the top of a Norwegian mountain, eating meatballs and brown sauce, overlooking a freezing lake and gorgeous snow-covered peaks, and listening to 3 guys from Shetland play their set at the folk festival up there.

The fiddle music and the sun and the atmosphere...I felt completely at peace and at one with the universe. It was definitely a religious experience. I think that Shetland is my next destination. It seems to be the missing link between my two great musical loves- Norwegian music and Celtic (Irish, Scottish, etc) fiddling. The old old old Shetland stuff reminds me of some of the Norwegian style music from Vestlandet and the two languages have interesting parallel words:

hus=house
nu=now
tae/te=to

The guys in the Fullsceilidh Spelemannslag were telling us that when they visit Norway, they speak in their thickest Shetland dialects because they are easier for the Norwegians to understand.
