Hey, I'm looking for suggestions for a book I'm trying to write. I'm inventing a superhero (pretty generic superhero) and I need an occupation for him to do in his normal person persona ( Read more... )

Wow, thanks for everybody's suggestions! You've given me lots of directions to look in! You're right, pgwfolc, I'm not thrilled with emergency services because I want my hero to be able to be super at rescues, not be stuck in his normal job persona.

The private investigator idea is definitely one of the most intriguing. I think I could write about it, if not absolutely true to life than at least true to how it's normally shown in fiction. And since investigating is done in private, there's no real issue with sneaking off for a while--nobody knows. Also could lead to interesting storylines.

I hadn't thought of the college professor idea, and I suppose it would work, but I really can't imagine a college professor frequently dashing out of class. Except, perhaps, if he pretends to have a very small bladder. I know it's done in many a super-hero comic, but I'm also not sure I could write about it. I've *had* college professors, but I don't know what they do outside of class. Although... the mad scientist does have some appeal, and you could also have an absentminded research scientist who teaches college courses and does research the rest of the time. Hmm, and with a college professor you could have a TA standing by to take over the class. "And so the chemical equation of that would be... wait! I have an idea! I must try it immediately! Sansfred, take over the rest of the class." *dashes away*

Thanks for all the ideas! Great place to start.
