9/3/22 - Cataloochee Elk Viewing Valley - Smoky Mountains - North Carolina

So I went to Asheville, NC all by myself for my bday. I wouund up going on a one lane dirt road up over the mountains and to the Cataloochee Elk Viewing Valley. It was amazing. I heard the elk but I did not see any - but that's ok because I saw them the next time I went up here. There's a campground up there and I dream about staying there.
There are several really cool original settler structures back there from when the valley was occupied. It's weird to think that this part of the world was still "the wilderness" in 1929 when this church was built but my house is older than this church and it was already a big city here.
I did some hiking. There were a few cemeteries up in the mountains. I went up to one of them. So many children that died so young back then. If cemeteries aren't your thing then scroll to the bottom because there is a beautiful series of Pipevine Swallowtail Butterflies.
There were so many different types of fungus growing out there. Some I've never seen before.
