The Day We Met Elisabeth Sladen

By mariannesquee and cosmic_llin

7.00 am - cosmic_llin left the house for the train station. mariannesquee went to bed, after a hard night of World of Warcraft… (which is a legitimate way to spend time ya know!)

11-ish am - cosmic_llin arrived in Barking. mariannesquee got up.

Noon-ish - mariannesquee arrived. cosmic_llin had saved her a space in the queue, which was lucky, because it was MASSIVE. We still weren’t anywhere near the front.
And then we queued. For a long time. In a boiling hot glass dome (mariannesquee's knees were all sweaty, ick.)

In our doctory scarves and jackets and so on (the lady versions of Three and Four don'tcha know!)

Here we are in our costumes, with mariannesquee's uncle

Topics for conversation included:

Judging people
The nature of male vs female fanning
Are there any straight people at all in this community?
Weirdy-hairy Russian people
Waxing
Languages, how English people don’t bother to learn other languages, but foreign people speak English
Complaining about children - how dare the intended target audience like our show?!
Conventions cosmic_llin has attended
BSG - we’re sad it’s ending, but it makes it easier to buy the box sets. And mariannesquee has an awesome tattoo!
How nice it is to have your DVD box sets all in a row
Kate Mulgrew fangirling of cosmic_llin’s youth, and Deep Space Nine
Martha Jones - mariannesquee thinks she’s lame, cosmic_llin isn’t that fussed, and we weren’t really bothered about Rose either…
The snog in Smith and Jones was lame, but at least it stops people going ‘Ooh, when will they kiss?’
Jessica Hynes is cool!
Human Nature was swish!
Tennant hair!
cosmic_llin made Who finger puppets and mariannesquee liked them, and the children behind us in the queue wanted there to be a K9 one next

Tom Baker should knit his autograph into mariannesquee’s scarf

3.30-ish - We got near the front of the queue. We were getting a bit shaky.

Just gone 3.30-ish - We got actually into the room. By this time we were very shaky indeed. mariannesquee was up first, and when she told Lis that she was nervous, Lis called her a diva, haha! And she also said she was very sweet, and admired her scarf!

cosmic_llin Met Tom Chadbon first, and chatted to him about how groovy Duggan is. He did a very convincing Welsh accent. What a lovely man!

Then she moved over to Lis, and told her about how she showed a bunch of Sarah Jane episodes to the kids she taught in Russia , and gave her finger puppets, and Lis said they could be collectors’ items and that she might even autograph them and auction them for charity!

3.45-ish - mariannesquee and cosmic_llin emerged from Tenth Planet, squealing like idiots (close enough for Lis to hear them, but it’s probably ok since the pitch was likely only audible to bats…), jumped up and down, hugged, squealed some more, jumped up and down some more… said the immortal lines "how amazing!?" "VERY amazing!"

4-ish - cosmic_llin headed to the train station for her epic, death-defying attempt to get back to Nottingham in time to see Family of Blood. mariannesquee went to the pub, since she had loads of time to get back. Drank a little too much, got told off by an old man for wearing a scarf in the hot weather, told him off in turn for not recognizing a Who scarf!

7-ish - cosmic_llin got back just in time. mariannesquee didn’t because she spent too long in the pub. Is there a moral here?

Verdict:

cosmic_llin: What an amazing day! Lis Sladen and Tom Chadbon were both so lovely and friendly! And meeting mariannesquee was bags of fun! YAY!!!

mariannesquee: It couldn't have been more perfect! As my first real fandom encounter (oh, the first of many) I was ill-prepared, but next time, I'll act like less of a moose! And Liz, whoa, prettier than a pretty thing with a hawt on top!

And if you couldn't be bothered to read all of that, here's the video:
