Kyoto: Day 3

Jan 28, 2007 18:08

After the exhausting second day biking all over the city, we took it easy on the third day and got a late start. There is an outdoor flea market on the 25th of each month at the Kintano Tenman-gu shrine, so we took a (hellishly) full bus there. The market was PACKED with people selling all kinds of things: octopus balls (“takoyaki,” a Kansai specialty), chocolate-covered bananas, sweet ginger drinks, video games, toys, clothes. I bought a used kimono at a stall- an older Japanese lady laughed at me when I accidentally tried on a male kimono. Good thing I got that hint.

Me, pretty happy at Kitano Tenman-gu:

We spent most of the afternoon enjoying the market together, particularly me after I accidentally purchased a drink that looked like a soda but ended up having alcohol in it. “W Mix,” my new best friend.

After Kitano Tenman-gu, it was already getting dark. We took a subway across the city to the removed shrine Fushimiinari-taisya, famous for its hundreds and hundreds of “tori,” which are the easily recognizable red Shinto gates. It was dark and pleasantly spooky there. We took a night hike (admittedly tiring at the end of the day) through countless tori to a look-out point above Kyoto.

Spooky Fushimiinari-taisya:
