Our birthdays in Melbourne

Nov 13, 2008 22:48

Friday, November 7th, was both Maggie's birthday and my own (what are the chances?!), and we celebrated by going into the city to see the aquarium and a few other sights around Melbourne. It was spitting rain for parts of the day, but we had plenty of places to take shelter.

This pretty tram was free to ride around the city circle.

This popular optical illusion has been made larger-than-life on this building.

Off to the aquarium... the first thing I found was Nemo!

Fish always have the best faces, even when they're not making any.

A neat lizard.

Cute turtles!

See-through fish (called Glass Fish or soemthing...)

Mexican Walking Fish.

Moon Jellies.

Japanese Spider Crab.

Shark!

This made me thing of rock-paper-scissors.
Rock = fish; scissors = shark; ray = paper.

A picture of Maggie taking a picture of Al taking a picture!

You could pay to dive in the tank with the sharks.

I love the tunnels in aquariums...
It's mesmerizing to watch the creatures, especially the rays, swim above you.

Back into the city streets.

An interesting sculpture of bees on a building.

Cityscape with the Yarra River in the foreground.

St. Patrick's Cathedral (I think)

After this we went for dinner at Munroe's in a section of the city called St. Kilda. I kind of just observed the conversations for the first little while until I started talking to Maggie's brother, who is also pretty heavily into photography and of course that meant lots of equipment-talk for the rest of the evening!

Afterwards, I requested to see the "grotesque clown face"
that my guide book spoke of at the nearby Luna Park. Awesome, no?

When we got home, I stayed up til 2:30am doing laundry and packing for my departure to Sydney in the morning. Leave it to me to leave it to the last minute!
