Invercargill to Te Anau (and beyond)

Feb 28, 2009 14:43

On February 22nd, I drove from Invercargill to Te Anau, completing the remainder of the Southern Scenic Drive. My chosen stops today were Monkey Island (did any of you ever play a video game of the same name?), the Clifden suspension bridge, and a wetland walk.

On the path down to Monkey Island, the sand was compacted yet soft and people had carved things in it.

The island is only accessible at low tide... there's a staircase up the middle of it.

An attempt at mimimalism (don't want it TOO minimal though, right Tanya?).

Much rolling countryside was travelled through today, with lots of sheep.

The Clifden suspension bridge, built in 1898-99.

I think this shot is quite captivating.

I can't remember the name of this wetland, but it was extensive.
There didn't seem to be much activity going on, however.

These insect homes were knitted into the bushes along the path.

I arrived in Te Anau in the early evening, but decided to continue along the Milford Road, since there were several DOC (Department of Conservation) campsites along the way and I was going to Milford Sound the next day anyway. The road is 120km long, but takes over two hours to drive due to all the curves, narrow sections, and one-lane bridges. I drove about half-way and found a beautiful little spot to camp next to a creek.
