Christchurch gondola

I haven't posted much about my time near Rangiora other than the horse post, so it's time to catch up now, especially considering that I am on the road again and have some beautiful scenery pictures I would like to share!

So, starting on January 27th, Kat (the other helper) and I drove just beyond Christchurch to a gondola that took us up to get a view of the sea and the town of Lyttleton below.

Click here to see the full-size panorama -- I love it!

I put the panorama taken at the top as the teaser because it's the photo I am happiest with,
but this was the view on the way up...

And a cute road trailing into the distance...
It looks like a road on a children's play mat to me. :)

Our ticket price included a strange "tunnel" experience at the top, where we sat in a self-propelled rail-car and moved slowly throughout talking exhibits. The little girl narrating was a little strange, a la Dakota Fanning. The ride reminded me of that Simpsons episode where Patti (Selma?) takes Bart and Lisa on an underground boat ride and Lisa's consumption of the water causes her to hallucinate... haha.

Annnnyway, after we got back down to the bottom, we drove through a very long tunnel to the other side of the mountain and the home of Lyttleton. There were many large commercial ships in the harbour, and the town itself was interesting in that it has primarily been built into the hillside.

A main street, ascending quite steeply up the mountain.
