In response to all the stupid crap we had to go thru yesterday, I was going to rant A LOT, but
boog0r already did (thanks Adam).
You can read it
here. I especially like the article "Marketing gambit exposes a wide generational gap."
I mean honestly, anyone with an internet connection or cell phone will know how quickly this story spread. Most "20-somethings" knew what the rest of the world couldn't catch onto. Why? No idea. It could have been over pretty quickly if people paid attention to all the blogs and flickr galleries of these "devices" that have been up for WEEKS.
I believe that since Turner didn't inform the city of the campaign, that the city's initial reaction was fine. But, when it's starting to roll past noon and a lot of the "youngsters" of the city know what's going on and the officials don't, it's time to rethink some things. I heard from my husband, who heard from his ex co-worker, and so on and so on. I told other people, my Mom especially because she was freaking out. You want to know why people our age don't watch the news? You have your answer now. I get all my news online, live and faster than you can say, "on tonight's 11:00 news...." I don't need to be scared and shut up in a hole because the media uses the term "suspicious device." It was an LED board with a CARTOON character on it. Whether or not you know what a mooninite is doesn't matter, it could have been Fred Flintstone and I'm sure the response would have been the same because people love to panic and obviously fear sells.
It was very annoying and actually REALLY embaressing to watch the news yesterday. I know one reporter kept saying, "these suspicious devices seem to be some sort of a cruel hoax or joke" and my favorite, "we're getting word in that these devices may be connected to some website, a college student or youngster playing a joke." If I hear the word hoax one more time, I may scream. It was ADVERTISING. What if they just sprayed it up there in graffiti, same damn thing. They just decided to be creative about it. Now granted the battery packs are probably a very scary thing for a bomb squad unit to see, I understand that. And fine, blow up the first two, but honestly, do a little research. It's basically a lite-brite. Remember those? The fact that they keep calling it a hoax now they know it's "guerilla advertising" is just stubbornness. And if you don't want to take a chance and broadcast what we were all trying to tell you, then you had better get things straight. When they can't pronounce "mooninites" correctly OR keep saying it's "college students" when they're an advertising firm in NY AND Turner Broadcasting OR using the term "youngsters." Youngsters? Are we in 1952 and are you 80 years old??? Youngsters... And a "website?" It's from a major television network!
Anyway, this mess helped me take my mind off of the past weekend I had. Joe (my father-in-law) is doing really well after his open-heart surgery. So even though the weekend was long and emotionally draining, it had a good outcome.
Youngsters...ugh.
